I know everyone saw the smoke coming from the back of Mika's McLaren on for formation lap and at the start. Nothing happened to the car during the race, so what do you think that smoke was all about? A diversionary tactic? Smoke & mirrors on the part of McLaren?
Either way, well done to Michael and Ferrari. |

On digital TV it showed Adrian Newey shaking his head and looking really dissapointed when the smoke started appearing.
So I guess it wasn't something they expected to happen. But nothing went wrong as we saw during the race. Could that really be dry ice, Peter? The smoke came from under the right side of the engine and I don't think they put the ice in there. Or do they? |

If Adrian Newey shook his head...u shoulda seen me!!!
I thought OH NO!!! Schuey's gonna inherit the WDC without a fight...we were actually hoping and praying for that start/overtaking manoeuvre of Mikas...Good fight after that...Killer drivers on the limit Somehow i get the feeling...in equal cars Michaels gonna be that 1.whatever seconds ahead, tho it wont be interesting no more. Hope Tom Walkinshaw offers him a 60million drive soon |

There was actually oil or something on the circuit behind Hakkinen's car, so obviously something was burning off or leaking. It was clearly nothing too serious because his car ran fine in the race.

Daily F1 Reports:
The smoke seen emanating from Mika Hakkinen’s McLaren on the starting grid at Suzuka was excess oil burning near the hot engine. On the Speedvision report, Bob Warsha and David Hobbes implied that it was a deliberate "Red Herring".* *(Very tasty with dill sauce and a chilled glass of Akavit.) |
