Motors TV

Motors TV have announced that from 1st Feb 2004 they will be broadcasting with an encrypted signal. I understand that this means that you will have to subscribe to a Sky package in order to receive it. The Sky call centre were unaware of this when I phoned them on 20-1-04 !

Is it possible to receive the channel elsewhere in the europe anymore? I guess SKY is sold for GB only.

Hang on!

I've just checked their web site.

The French/International signal on Astra 19.2E is to be encrypted (from the 1st Feb) with MediaGuard 2.

Their signal on Hotbird 6 (Europe) is already encrypted with Viaaccess 2.

However, there is no mention of Astra 28.2E (which hosts most 'Sky Digital' channels). Also note that the evil Sky 'Digiboxes' only understand free-to-air or NDS-VideoGuard-encrypted signals.

Dare I say it... but it's still free-to-air with a 'Sky' setup.

I honestly expected MotorsTV to encrypt on 28.2E, and that I'd have to adjust my dish to 19.2E for free-to-air. However, it seems to have gone the other way!

BSTR,

I don't see why someone in mainland Europe couldn't pick-up Astra 28.2E.

So are you saying that nothing will change on my current subscription-free Sky set up? The Motors TV website is a bit confusing in that case!! I havent the faintest idea to what part of the galaxy my dish is pointed and dont really want to pay to have the whole darn thing re aligned

If you are getting the free services provided by Sky,its pointed at 28.2E.No point in re-alining it as the other locations are already encripted by Feb 1st.
I would not be suprised if we are not encripted before long however. Its all to do with the sale of rights by the programme providers. The channels not owned by Sky like Motors TV get no part of your subscription, and in fact have to pay Sky to get on the EPG.They are funded entirely by advertising.

Not sure about removing it completely. The message on the Motors TV website is extremely ambiguous to those of us who use Sky and have no knowledge of the technical details

As runnyhunny said it doesn't mention the 28.8 satellite so I doubt us in the UK will be affected. Have to see though!

I'm impressed by everybody's knowledge of TV satellites.... I'm no Luddite either but how do you know all this stuff? I still think Motors TV will be causing alarm to simple minds like mine!!

I believe MotorsTV will still be free-to-air on Astra 28.2E ('Sky'), so it'll work with or without a Sky viewing card. Fow now, we are OK!

However, at some later date, I strongly suspect MotorsTV will enter into some kind of deal with Sky/NDS, so that this signal becomes encrypted with VideoGuard. This will probably require the Sky family pack (~£19/month).

If MotorsTV ceases to be free-to-air, then it's simple - I'll stop watching it. I've got no desire to fund the Sky empire.

If it were available on NTL then I'd willingly pay. Sadly it's not so I go without!

I'm no expert on the subject but isn't there a similar situation with BBC/ITV which are encripted but free-to-view. If you don't have a Sky subscription you need free veiwing card which can only be supplied to a UK address. It's all to do with TV rights. For example ITV ma have brought the rights to show the latest Hollywood blockbuster but they can only show it to viewers within the UK. With Motors getting the rights to more and more championships the same restrictions will apply.

I've investigated this recently, and oddly all the BBC channels dont need a card, but to get ITV and Channel 4 you have to buy a "free" card that costs £23.50...mad or what!

Just to clear things up, here are some quotes from the Motors TV forum...

Quote:

Will the sky digital signal of motors TV encrypt in february too ?

Frédéric Viger :Not at all !
Quote:

Q: There have been suggestions in the past from Motors TV see that they would join the family pack of SKy at some point, although, that didn't happen at that time.
It might in the future, i suppose.

Frédéric Viger : We remain free on SKY.

'Free on Sky', eh? Hurrah!

Although slightly off-topic, the BBC/ITV situation is this:

The BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and five channels were 'free-to-view' (rather than free-ao-air) on 28.2E, so they were encrypted with Sky/NDS VideoGuard. Thankfully, the BBC, Channel4 and five paid Sky to produce 'free-to-view' viewing cards, which would allow free-of-charge reception of these stations.

Recently, the BBC decided to save some cash, and go completely free-to-air. Therefore, the supply of free free-to-view cards has stopped (they are now about £25).

Although I'm pleased with the BBC's move (and hope ITV, Channel 4 and five do likewise), it means they have some issues with rights. They cannot guarantee that they can only be picked-up in the UK, so they have lost programmes like 24.

There are plenty of web sites out there with this information, and far more.

Someone probably worth contacting about Motors TV would be Matt Lamprell of BTCCPAGES.com as he seems to be working for them at the moment. Or at least that is what he told a few of us at Autosport International. He has been working on their english version of the web site.
