Excuse me?
Twas watching the British Superbikes from Snetterton this afternoon, when the announcer said "as the riders go around Bumhole Corner". What? Sorry??
Any help with regards to this would be appreciated. |

I can guarantee that once you start calling it that the name will stick.
As a season ticket holder at Snetterton often asked by the locals where I watch from. So of course without even thinking of it ,reply, the bumhole. Its a good way of getting some very strange looks from workmates. Love the old penguin and polar bear sanctuary though. |

Who really cares what we call it. Snetterton isn't the best track we have.

Even if you don't like it - they have to call the corners something..

A quick glance at the circuit map revealed that this corner is in fact named BOMB hole. The reason for this being that it is graced with an actual not-a-photograph Bomb Hole.
You lot have perverted minds. |

It is what is says on the tin!! Snetterton was a former airfield, the dip in the track is actually a Bombhole from the First World War! (I think)

me thinks more likely WW2 as I don't think too many Zeplins got that far in to Norfolk in WW1, but I could be wrong. Still at least the catering's better than the old caravan they had there in the early 70's

It's actually a difficult corner due to the way it unsettles the car when you drive thoughtir so "bummhole" might actually be a more suitable epithet.

We have a link on the circuit guide to a site called Ghost in the Machine which was all about the history of Snetterton in the Second World War. I've just realised that the link we have which is http://sites.netscape.net/gostryter/B17pow.html no longer works. Does anyone know if the site simply went out of existance or did it move to a new location? It was an interesting site.

Carrie - I found it!
Just a question of using my USAAF research materials to figure out which squadron was based at Snetterton, and sent Yahoo searching for it. http://www.geocities.com/snetterton_b17_pow_mia/ |

Well, back in its old location it was just a history of Snetterton as a WWII airbase. Seems the site has changed quite a bit since then and as a result I don't think it can stay on the circuit guides now they're on B&Qsi
A shame really, but such is life. Anyway, thanks for finding the site, I had hunted about and hadn't managed to. |

Taken from 'Motor Racing Circuits in England Then and Now' by Peter Swinger.
'At the end of the Revett Straight are the Esses followed by the Bomb Hole; no bomb ever fell on RAF Snetterton Heath so some explanation of how the name came about is called for. It comes from the two-wheeled contingent, some of whom used to find negotiating this part of the course somewhat difficult and parted from their machinery on a regular basis and started to call it the Bum Hole - it must be assumed that someone found this a little indiscreet and converted the name into the Bomb Hole.' That old back straight really must have been bumpy. Am i right in thinking it's the entry road now?

The circuit took a time to grow on me but I love the place now.
It has an atmosphere all of its own. It must be the wartime memories but I can guarantee if you are ever there on Rememberance Sunday you will never forget the feeling during the silence |
