Bas Leinders to Minardi?!

HOT news: Bas Leinders has received an offer for the 3rd seat at Minardi, if he can bring 2,5 million euro to the team. Rumours say that C.Albers received the same offer.

Bas Leinders told us that 65% of the budget had already been found, and he kept on searching. The deal is very interesting because Alex Yoong is reported to have a prestation-clausule in his contract, wich could see him lose his seat if he does not perform.

I take it the amount Leinders would have to bring is the same as the amount Yoong brings to Minardi?

Yoong or his sponsors, effectively the same thing paid $20 million for the Minardi seat

I rate Leinders higher than Wilson, and not because he's Belgian.

Bas Leinders CV

1994 Benelux Formula Ford Champion
Belgian Formula Ford Champion - MB Racing (B) total of 5 victories

1995 British Formula Ford Champion
European Formula Ford Champion - SWIFT Racing cars (GB) - total of 7 victories

1996 European Formula Opel Champion - Van Amersfoort Racing (NL) - 8 victories (new record)

1997 Seventh in German F3 Championship - Van Amersfoort Racing (NL)

1998 German Formule 3 Champion - Van Amersfoort Racing (NL) - 7 victories

1999 FIA F3000 Championship - Witmeur-Team KTR (B)

2000 FIA F3000 Championship - Kid Jensen Racing (GB)

2001 FIA F3000 Championship - KTR (B)

Sorry, but the CV above is good enough for F1. It's better then most of the current F1 drivers.

Let's see how he gets on...

WHAT? When I read the message I think previously that Bas Leinders could sign with European Minardi F3000, not with European Minardi F1.

In one hand, I'm glad if Bas Leinders and Christijan Albers got the chance to run a F1 car (more for Albers, who entered the vital income of "Gericom" for Minardi), but in the other hand I'm disgusted if Stoddart plays the same joke as Prost did with Gaston Mazzacane last year: first they sign the driver to engage the budget behind him, and later they dropped the driver retaining the sponsors what that driver brough to the team. If it will be done, I prefer the team use a style more likely that equipe Ligier did in 1995, when they alterned Aguri Suzuki and Martin Brundle in the second car of the team that year.

Perhaps you didn't read the word "CHAMPION" behind "1994 Benelux Formula Ford", "1995 British Formula Ford", "1996 European Formula Opel" and "1998 German Formule 3".

The only series in wich he participated and didn't became champion was F3000, but that is --in my opinion-- because F3000 not at all depends on talent alone (you need talent, ofcourse, but without A LOT of luck and a good team you're nowhere).

Bas Leinders always impressed me, and I'm sure he'll impress again with his new job in F1 (budget seems nearly round).

I'm sorry Rempie, but I think Yoong has the 2002 season in the bag. Stoddart would not have changed the name of the team for a driver he wasn't sure would last the season. Maybe '03 could be Bas' year.

We are talking about the 3rd driver seat. Yoong and Webber will start the season, but if anything happens to them (or they don't perform well) Bas will be the first in line to replace them (he will travel to every GP)

..at least, if he can get the money.

What is the European Minardi F3000 team doing!?!

They haven't been in any testing yet, is Paul Stoddart fully concentrating on F1 and leaving F3000 ?

Are you implying there might not be any European Minardi F3000 this year?

yup...all teams have been testing...and the ones that haven't tested have either stopped (Prost Jr) or moved to Formula Nissan (KTR and maybe DAMS)..now that European Minardi hasn't tested they could go one of those ways

I've also heard that Minardi will be testing next month, from reliable sources - the official word is that they don't want to test until they have finalised their driver line-up.

That probably isn't going to happen until SuperNova finalises its driver line-up.

...but expect Gianmaria Bruni to be in there.

so for European Minardi F3000 we have left:
- Bruni
- Hackett
- Albers
- Piccini (even though he's linked to Coloni)
- Saelens (even though he said it was his last season in 2001 ?)
