Qualifying does serve a purpose. They have 3 cars now and can block out Porsche from racing the leading car(s) by doing a 1-2-3. Having/getting all the cars ahead of the Porsches at the start can help with strategy as well. It puts them in the drivers seat for the tempo of at least the first stint of the race. And of course like you said, bragging rights, that can be important too! I think both teams would like to brag about being on pole.

i am not sure either team are bothered by the bragging rights, they just want to win and after last year Toyota will be solely focused on getting the reliability, set up and race pace. I will be there to watch on test day but expect very few ultra fast runs and plenty of longer runs to get the data required to work out pit stop strategy

They have been for roughly 10 years now. Trucks weighing 8-10,000 lbs are now classified as medium duty and are held to the same emissions standards as passenger cars and light duty trucks.

i hope they do as standing overlooking the track outside our campsite on thursday evening it is always fun when the fast cars put the hammer down and go for it, however this year i suspect they will all take it easy and take no risks

Wednesday early night seems like the time for records now though, Neel Jani's 3:16.887 was about 8 minutes into Wednesday qualifying in 2015. So we might get early excitement again.

I don't think it has been posted before, here is a link to racecar-enginering article about updated Toyota TS050:
http://www.racecar-engineering.com/cars/toyota-ts050/ At the end there is also explanation how they may be doing this conflicted "double deck diffuser". |

Aerodynamics is never a 1 dimensional thing. It's hard to just say that the side inlet is the only thing activating the blown diffuser because flow around a car is so interactive.
With that said, it's quite clear they are using the holes in the floor for some aerodynamic benefit....No good aerodynamicist is going to leave any hole in the floor and have no understanding of the flow through it especially around the diffuser.... If they needed suspension clearance, they will tell the engineers to move the suspension out of the way because the aero is more important ... The holes are not their for suspension clearance although they may have sold that to the FIA.... These are the same people who blocked out all their wheels and complain about the mandatory fender holes. no such thing as random holes at this level. |

Seems Lopez crashed again at the Spa test, but was due to a "set-up error"

Some images that have been posted on various sites like endurance-info and sc365 show that the Toyota has withheld the diveplanes on a car or two. I wonder if they'll run the test day in either configuration to see the differences.
This one taken yesterday from motorsport.com, the #8 without diveplanes |

That 3:20 though ...
And we've still got the afternoon session to come. Hopefully TMG stick a set of sticker slicks on and go for it near the end - the headlines and confidence from a sub-3:20 time on Test Day would be immense. It's also good to see Lopez and Kunimoto aren't being left behind, they're both doing well for their first times. |

Buemi with a stint that included several 3:20 laptimes, going onto a 14th lap on fuel.
Well well well... |

Weren't they supposed to slow the lmp1's by 4 seconds at Le Mans with the new aero rules? Just imagine if they left them alone. Sub 3:15's would be the norm. But just how fast can Toyota (and Prosche) really go? A 3:18 on the test day is not hanging about. Maybe the record really is in jeopardy?

Also, I can only find one 14-lap stint by a Porsche during today's sessions (late afternoon, Andre Lotterer in the #1) and it may have been aided by a SC/slow zone deployment in the middle; however, the fastest I see in there are 2 3:22.5s and a lot of 3:25-3:30.
So, dare I say it... Toyota has both pace and fuel range in hand right now? |

Good pace from Toyota today, they look very strong. I would take a lights to flag victory for Toyota (got the other classes to fall back on) think they deserve it not only after last year but the commitment they've shown the last 5 years, many manufacturers would have pulled the plug going 4 years without a win at Le Mans

It's a good time to buy Toyota stocks just before Le Mans, isn't it?
