How the steering system works?

Hi all.My friend and I are thinking of building a kart.Can anyone tell me how does the steering system work?Some diagrams would be useful.Thanks.

basically, there is a steering shaft which has two mounts. Between those two mounts, there are two arms called pitman arms. They are welded to the steering shaft and stick directly downwwards when going straight. A bolt goes between those two arms and also through the tie rod ends. The tie rods then go out to the spindles and are bolted onto a small arm that trails off the back of it. Turning the shaft moves the pittman arms which causes tie rods to move which turn the spindles. You can change the steering ratio by varying the length of the pittman arms
