Certainly if you want to view at the entry to the Porsche Curves you need to head out of the main circuit entrance and either hop on the shuttle bus (1 stop) or walk what is a fair drag (as a couple of us rookies found out last year) down to the specatator area. You have to eventually turn left at the roundabout and chip alongside the paid-for campsites.

I'd be interested to know about viewing options later on in the sequence of turns and what you can see walking back from the Ford Chicane.

A 'speed trap' just gives us a spot speed exiting Porsche. Why bother when there are 'official' times provided for the sector of the Porsche Curves...
I still maintain it will be a 458...

Porsche Curves sector question.

I read last year that Audi achieved an average speed though the Porsche Curves of 270kmh in 2013. Is that for the whole third sector (hard to believe), or how much further is the third sector broken down? And where can I find such info?

Managed to find it on the WEC's T&S data site, though it should be noted that 2016 is missing the Porsche Curves data.

Best time all time in race was by Allan McNish in 2013, of 15.075 seconds/269.3kmh/167.3mph

Best all time overall was by Marcel Fassler, again 2013, of 15.017 sec./270.4kmh/168mph

Times took a hit in 2014 due to the narrower tires and car track, but approached 2013 levels again in 2015.

Even with the ACO's attempts in the WEC to cut cornering speeds, the LMP1s are as fast as ever this season, so we could see new records being set in the Porsche Curves this year if Toyota and Porsche get their sums right.

Have the ACO changed the Porsche Curves sector? Elapsed time is lower, but speeds are also slower?

Also it should be noted that the ACO didn't take Porsche Curves times last year on their print out/PDF.

Good bump I shall repeat what I said in the race thread

Presumably he 'sector' is shorter, so the lap time is shorter. How aligned with the previous measurement is it? Perhaps it misses the faster bit? Sounds incomparable to me

Assuming the sector they "cut out" of the telemetry measurement it's either in the beginning or the end of the Porsche curves, it's pretty safe to say that the average it's not slower after the change. That's because the slowest part of the Porsche curves is the entry and the last corner (Corvette). In other words, if we had the same timing sector as before, the times would be slower.
This video probably shows the fastest lap which you can watch with telemetry. Watch at 9:00. That average was 15,3s, 0,3s slower than the record of 15s.

Was the start of the sector before braking?

I don't know. If I had to guess, I'd say it was the last part, the Corvette corner. This corner apparently had more modifications around that area; they probably had to change the position of the "device" (which I have no idea how it's called) used to record the times.

Here's the fastest average of the 2014 race. 15.279s, 265km/h. Fassler again.

So if the timing line didn't move this year (it's almost certain it did), times this year are on par with what the 2014-15 cars did.

It's clear that especially for Audi from 2011-2013 that the wider tires and more mechanical grip helped with the sector times.

The 2017 map ( http://fiawec.alkamelsystems.com/Res...CircuitMap.png ) says the Porsche section goes from 11377,7m to 12509,3m or 1131,6m.

In the Specific Sectors ( http://fiawec.alkamelsystems.com/Res...actice%202.PDF ), the best time of 14,203s equates to

1131,6m/14,203s = 79,7m/s or 286,8km/h

while the PDF says it is only 261,6km/h (this speed would mean a length of 1032,1m, the section for 2016??). So the timekeepers probably forgot to change the length of the section in the speed calculation.

Edit: 286 seems a bit high, so maybe the timed section remains at 1032m and the circuit map is wrong?

286 is impossible. The circuit map doesn't match the timing line. The distance between the two timing lines was reduced from 1127.9m to 1032.1m.
According to some quick math I did, I'd say they're 0,5s slower than before (2013), so they'd be doing an average of 15,5s.
My conclusion, in average speed: 2013>2012/2015>2014>2017.
