Who was Anton Sobriquet?
In the mid-eighties, there was a more than decent single seater racer who was anxious about the publicity he might get. So he called himself "Anton Sobriquet".
I was wondering. Fifteen years down the line, did he ever come clean? Who was he, and did he actually make another name for himself in motor racing? |

I remember he drove a cream coloured F3 Ralt RT3 as team mate to Steve Bradley in '84 I think.
I'll ask Steve next time I speak to him. |

I sent him a sample print of him spinning wildly at the chicane behind paddock at Zolder in 1984 (I think 1984, in any event it was the 1st year of F3 class B), would you ask him whether he liked it, I found the neg' the other day ! :-) |

His name was Tony Smedley. Don't know what he does now.

Thanks for that, Andrew. This throws something intriguing into the mix.
He actually raced as AJ Smedley (unless there's another one) during 1983 in the Brands Hatch winter Formula Ford races, but by 1985 he was in Formula 3 as Sobriquet. I wonder why. And then after 1985, not a peep. I hope he enjoyed his time in the series. |

He was my accountant for a while in the later 80s, based in Saffron Walden and living in Cambridge, but I haven't heard of him since then. He had connections in Sweden and was going to do some racing there but I don't think it ever happened. The 'nom de course' was for the usual reason of family opposition, I believe
