Paul Pietsch

I have just learned that Paul Pietsch died on the 31st March 2012. He reached the grand age of 101 years.

He'll not be a familiar name to younger forum members, but he was a top driver before the war, perhaps not an ace, but useful nontheless, and good enough to be in the Auto Union team for 1935. He also raced his own Alfa Romeo and Maserati cars.

Unfortunately he is best known for his wife, who had an affair with Achille Varzi and introduced him to the delights of morphine addiction. Although Varzi late "cleaned-up", it probably ruined a great career.

After the war he founded the German magazine Das Auto.
RIP.
