Citizen Khan, son of a bus driver, hardly likely to be pro car is he?

Mike, I see Norwich (NR6) - Elm Hill I think - has been chosen as the second-best postcode to live in England. That'll push the prices up...

Elm Hill? Those cobbles would destroy your suspension.....

It certainly is a lovely old street, hence used for film sets quite often! Luckily I get to walk down it several times a year as the barber I use is located there.

I did once almost seriously contemplate a flat there when I was working at Lotus. Funnily enough Lotus have recently used it as a setting for PR photos.

So, first UK driving tests were in 1935. Anyone confess to having a licence before that?

Reported in the news today that by the end of this year less emphasis will be put on driving and control during tests, more on how to operate technology within the car..... Not sure I'm happy with that- but hopefully it won't include how to steer with your knees while texting!

I saw that & would agree with you. The already pretty useless snowflake generation won't really need any life skills at all beyond vacuously pushing a few buttons on a 'device'.

There's currently an ad on TV for a small car that's only virtue appears to be having the facility to connect up to seven devices to Wi-Fi. The car doesn't have seven seats.

Sometimes I wish I was as old as Bauble!

I must confess that the use of satellite navigation screens whilst driving has always puzzled me since in doing so it demands refocussing on the screen and back again to the road ahead. Surely this in itself is potentially hazardous since your vision is temporarily impaired albeit for a split second or so. Every since the introduction of these I have questioned in my own mind the legality of using such a device whilst driving.
I have followed the Dakar raid bike footage for some years and once again I do not know how the riders manage to read their road book and watch the terrain at the same time particularly at the speeds they travel at across the rocky desert tracks.

I got an email from the DVSA about it this morning and I've come to the conclusion that there must be a lot of money changing hands during driving tests, especially in London when you see the standard of driving these days.

I even heard them mention on the Beeb just now that you will be taught how to operate the heated rear screen - how on earth have we managed all these years???

With the advent of autonomous cars, will those of us who can drive have to be taught how not to?

I'm not too sure reliance on satnavs should be encouraged by the gubberment. Just the other morning I was turning right into the road where the pickup and white car are going, a car in front of me started to turn right then headed left toward where the white lorry and van are and as I turned into the road I was confronted with a car coming toward me the wrong way, both Priuses with the TFL minicab sticker in the window no doubt following a sat nav. https://goo.gl/maps/CMYApMyRU9A2

Perhaps there's justification for compulsory compass and map reading techniques prior to the onset of a journey meaning concentration on what's happening on the road in front of you!

Reading up recently , Sat Navs still send drivers on approx 30% longer milages than ideal .

My HGV Sat Nav , admittedly a few years old now , often tried to send me through town centres or under low bridges .

So I would always get everywhere by the old fashioned method & just use the Nav to find the address when I got there .

First thing with an 'HGV' satnav is to make sure you put all your truck's exact measurements and weights into it's memory.....

Even then, the data they use for route planning is not without flaws. For an example, I can't get from Kent to Essex through the tunnels at Dartford- according to the satnav! It asks me to drive into London instead. (Going other way over bridge OK though.) And the database (on mine at least) doesn't take mountains into account, so is quite likely to take you the most fuel burning route, rather than one that may be longer but is faster and cheaper....

So, an aid but not to be taken as gospel. There's often a difference between a route conforming to the parameters entered, and one you would rather take!

I've always got an atlas open alongside me in the truck and use that primarily with the satnav filling in detail.
