Please Identify this Curve
Dear Forum Readers,
I am researching the 1982 Italian Grand Prix run at Monza and won by Rene Arnoux that year. I found this old photo of a turn at Monza that year and was wondering if anybody could discern which turn it is. Thanks, Charles Fleming |

I think this might be the Parabolica.

I think it's the first Lesmo as the second lesmo has much bigger run-off area.

I definitely agree with Curva Grande. Parabolica had much more run off room than that, and it's way too fast to be either Lesmo.

Also, the rubber is laid down very gently, which suggests a fast corner. If it were either Lesmo, there'd be rubber at mid corner where they all started accelerating hard.
Then again, I could be completely wrong |

Its definitely the second Lesmo, taken from the grandstand that recently came down to create a bigger run-off.

Les-mo or not to Les-mo.That is the ?
As we say here in the SE US,
Dear Y'all, I now agreee it is the second Lssmo. Thanks to Andy for putting the point on the pencil, and for everybody else for shapening it. So, who else in the forum would be willing and able to help me define the 1982 Monza. What did the circuit look like? Do you have shots of the turns? I have searched high and low and found little. Any help appreciated. |

Second Lesmo in GPL
The second Lesmo as modeled in Grand Prix Legends does have the grand stand, which apparently has since been torn down, but no runoff area.

I've used GPL to compare my photos with Rouen and old Spa! Great stuff.

It is definitely the second Lesmo: back then it had very little run-off (which is what made it so awesome) and is the same corner where, on the exit in the 1981 GP, John Watson had his massive crash that split his McLaren in half. It's from the inside of this very corner that I last saw - in the flesh - Ayrton Senna qualify for a GP, in his McLaren in 1992 (a race he was to win). That memory will stay with me forever.
Back to the picture, Curve Grande, Lesmo 1 and Parabolica had greater run-offs than that in this image (wish I could tell who's in that Ferrari - Tambay or Andretti - but can't make out the number or the helmet colour. Andretti, of course, qualified on pole on his comeback to F1 with Ferrari, much to the tifosi's delight. Also to their delight was Arnoux's victory for, although he drove for arch rivals Renault, he had just signed for the Scuderia for the 1983 season). |
