Grand Slam or Black Wiggle Dream?? (Merged x3) - Now History...

A Grand Slam concept sounds interesting, and makes a good talking point...

But what is the chance it shall be won?

Perhaps more to the point, the series winner doesnt get that kind of windfall, so it seems a courageous move to suggest that the winner of the 4 headline events should be celebrated in this way

This has been dreamed up as an option purely to keep the Gold Coast event alive. Surfers is a great party but the racing & circuit are hardly befitting of a grand slam status.

Nail on the head billy. The v8's haven't come out of the Super GP 09 as they had hoped with everyone in agreeance that an international category is required for it to be a successful event.

This is power play by V8SA in an attempt to remain relevant in the Super GP plans moving forward.

Interested to see that the Homebush 500 is part of the plans when the event hasn't been run yet.

An international driver initiative would be more useful?

Round up some failed F1 hopefuls (F3 champs and the like who have done a handful of F1 tests to little success, e.g. van der Garde, Carroll etc) and stick 'em in a VESA-sponsored V8 to drum up some international interest and therefore keep the SuperGP gravy train going...

Useless idea - as soon as you have two different drivers win any of the events, the whole thing is over and out.

It may have been more feasable if either Philip Island or Townsville (if he wanted a street circuit) replaced GC which I doubt will be run again.

Ahh... so you've seen through their 'cunning' P.R. ploy?

Advertise & promote a $2 Mil prize, knowing it's unlikely to be won!
They'll probably take out an insurance policy to be safe (same as Millionaire does) & only be up for the (small) cost of the premium!

I think it's a bunch of useless fluff.

If they were serious they'd throw down a million for a win at the Gold Coast.

But that would require a 'guaranteed' payout! Unlike the 'unlikely' chance of 'The same Driver winning; Clipsal, Bathurst, Gold Coast & Homebush' - (especially given that Bathurst is a 2 Driver event)!

Grand Slam or Black Wiggle Dream

Just herd on v8extra that the Black Wiggle is offering $2million to the driver who can win the NEW v8 supertaxi Grand Slam ( Clipsal, Bathurst, Gold Coast and Sydney ) in 2010.

Is this real or just a dream or great PR for the Wiggle.

Thoughts anyone.

On the current rules they will have to win all 7 races, or will round winners be coming back perhaps?

They have spent years pumping up the championship above Bathurst, now this, will the championship winner now get $2million also??

Just what 888 or HRT need, more money. It would be nice for the money to be split evenly via the REC to those who need it, but no headlines to be found there.

I believe TSR created a new topic on the subject. That's why the heading says merged x2.

I think, instead of 2mil for winning all four, why not $500,000 to each event, reguardless on if that driver won any of the other events.

Or just create a non-championship event, like the Nascar All Star race, and give drivers money that way.

Isn't that generally how it is these days anyway?

Call me old fashioned, but surely whoever finishes first in the series deserves much more of a 'reward' than the car finishing 26th?

Remember the times when there were lap leader bonus' at Bathurst ($100 per lap led etc), conditional prizemoney if you carried a BJT-M sticker etc...

No more 'Grand slam'

http://www.speedcafe.com.au/2011/03/...nd-slam-offer/

Quote:
V8 Supercars drivers will not contest for the $2 million Grand Slam prize this year.

In what was originally planned to be an annual prize, the large cash offer has been withdrawn. V8 Supercars says that its “time and money” are better spent in other areas of the sport.

The $2 million Grand Slam was announced during last year’s Clipsal 500 and would be awarded to any driver who could win V8’s four big events – the Clipsal 500, Bathurst 1000, Gold Coast 600 and Sydney 500 in one year.

On the eve of this weekend’s Clipsal 500, V8 Supercars media manager Cole Hitchock told Adelaide newspaper The Advertiser that the prize was now defunct.

“It was not a high priority,” Hitchcock confirmed.

“There are an enormous amount of other things happening behind the scenes. We’ve taken on another event (New Zealand) and decided to put resources into other things.”

TeamVodafone’s championship leader Jamie Whincup told The Advertiser that he was not surprised that the cash prize had been withdrawn.

“I said at the time it was all a bit of media dribble to be honest,” he said.

“No one was ever going to win. It was zero inspiration and after Adelaide there was only one guy thinking about it and that was Garth Tander.

“Everyone else was written off after Adelaide, so hey it didn’t work, and it was never going to work.”
Gotta agree with JW there, it was never a prize that could realistically have been won by a driver.... Has anyone actually ever won all those events within a year?

And of course that is why it was offered:
  • Big hype
  • Big spin
  • Very little liklihood of having to pay out

firstly why would you do that

and secondly, they did, they put all the money they put into this last years in FF this year (ie none) but seriusly isnt giving Ff a chance to run in front of 80k people this weekend enough,

I didnt realise charging someone top dollar for the privilege is now considered 'giving someone a chance'.

Yes these prizes that rely on the chance of winning under all these impossible to reach scenarios are just stupid. I don't even think the hype even did anything, no one really cared because it was totally unrealistic.
