The final drive ratio at Pukekohe was higher this year due to the amount of time that the cars spend on their limiters................ I just wonder.........

I want to hear more about this Ferrari Sportscar on the mountain....
As far as i know it'd be a NASCAR or a Sports Sedan in the post-chase configuration, certainly not a V8Supercar. As for pre-chase, probably an open-wheeler. |

Just adding to the general chit-chat, without having any hard facts at hand, I can add:
I recall Chris Amon in a Ferrari P4 (on loan to Scuderia Veloce) pulling 185-186 mph (in I think, 1969. It could have been one or two years earlier) when I was there for an Easter meeting. I think that equates pretty close to 300kph. I also remember Frank Matich in his Matich SR4, and Bevan Gibson in Bob Jane's Elfin 400 pulling similar speeds. I don't remember open wheelers pulling the same top speeds, although they might have been quicker everywhere else. I think Neil Allen's lap in an F5000 saw a top speed on Conrod that was getting pretty close to that 300 mark. Conrod in the sixties was narrower, bumpier, and the humps were humpier, so any of those speeds would have been pretty hairy. I have yet to hear of any speeds down Conrod much above the 300kph mark, but if there are any, I'd look to Sports Sedans, or some of the more exotic things in the 12 and 24 hour races. |

I recall seeing the 300ZX for sale in Auto Action claiming that it was the fastest car ever timed down Conrod Straight. It had the speed on the advertisement. Was quite a few years ago now though.

I believe that in pre-chase days Bill Brown in the Ferrari P4 at 300km/h was the quickest car down Conrod. This was in 1968... I believe that some factory GP bikes went quicker in the 70's.
I always thought the quickest car in post-chase days was Glenn Seton's Falcon at 302km/h. Who knows that those 427 Munros could've done if they were really extended? Btw, as for the road registered Toranas hitting 300km/h in the Flying Fifth. I was there (manning driveways) in 86 (pre the chase) and I remember the ACT registered Torana A9X, which I think was double entered. Both drivers recorded 264Km/h, which is still mightily impressive! |

Bevan Gibson was chasing Frank Matich's SR4 down Conrod. The Matich had a miss, else Gibson's Bob Jane-owned Elfin wouldn't have been in the hunt. Gibson had complained that the car was getting light in the nose during practice: John Harvey had driven the car in practice and advised Bevan to lift off as he approached the last hump to change the angle of attack.
In the thrill of the chase, it seemed that the advice was forgotten, and slipstreamed the Matich, pulled out to overtake as they approached the hump... and the car took off. In Bill Woods' book, Matich says that he didn't see the ensuing crash, or the fiery aftermath, until he had rounded Hell Corner. |

I don't know what speeds the bikes have done over the years, but the MotoGP bikes (Ducati) reached a highest speed of 347kph last year. So if the Ferrari P3 figures of 340kph are correct, I'd say there wouldn't be any bikes that would have come close to that. It would be interesting to know what sort of speeds they have reached though, especially in the old days when the track was so rough.
P.S. Ross, don't do that, I spilled my beer laughing. |

I don't believe Seto did 300...it was 296, I think in an EL and this is still the fastest Supercar (again, I think).
Paul Stubber did 296 or 297 in the Camaro last year. Pre Chase days, Bill Brown in the P4 Ferrari was clocked at 186mph, which translates to 301.3kmh with my maths. I'm pretty sure that Spencer Martin did 182 or 183mph in the LM250 of David McKays which is a mighty effort as well. Don't know of any others over 300... |

Bevan Gibson's crash is also described in "The Rise & Fall of Peter Brock" pages 87 & 88.
As well as what Henry said, it also estimated a speed of 270km/h when the crash happened. Also mentioned the car went vertical 8 metres in the air, and landed upside down, breaking Gibson's neck and spinning all the way down into Murrays in flames. |

I was told a few years back by a NASCAR crew that Jim Richards ( i think) was clocked at 200mph (320km) down conrod. As i was quite young (excited and sitting in a car) my memory of the exact driver is slightly vague.

Jim only ran the Midgley Chevy Lumina at Bathurst and my reco is that this was the fastest down Conrod, 320 - 319 sounds right. (I drove Jim's Porsche as the Pace Car for the race!). Dean Wanless was only two poofteenths behind in the T'Bird.
The Fireworks King car was a Chevy Monte Carlo - ex-Tropic Coast Racing run by Scotty Williams and driven by Ingall. I don't think they toped Jim but this was an aim for the team for the weekend. This may be hard to verify as anything with a roof that laps quicker than a V8SC gets the TC KYBOSH! Last edited by Camaroz; 22 Apr 2005 at 10:54. |

In '99 we were clocked doing 210kph in slipstreaming F Vees - not bad for cars with 40 odd hp!!!

Despite this undeniably significant amd historical achievement, Seton would no doubt like the winner's trophy and the plaque in the footpath at Bathurst as well! Maybe this year. Go Seto!
