Closed Road Motorsport

Well I have driven on some great roads across the UK and some of them i have thought, "imagine a hillclimb on this", so who thinks some of them may well be used in the future for this kind of motorsport?

Its encouraging to see that there are moves going on to address this area. One suggestion I have read about is to alter the Road Traffic Act to give local authorities the power to approve limited road closures for motorsport events. IF it happens it would be great, assuming that L.A.'s will take up the option and can be persuaded to permit events it should encourage a wider spread of sport than we currently see and more grass roots exposure has to be a good thing.

For me the big stumbling block would be attitudes of some councilors who might see it as noisy and dangerous chaos to be discouraged wherever possible

Just My Opinion.... YMMV

I have just seen a press release regarding this. The coalition government are looking into this with a favourable view.

This could be fantastic. There could be great potential here to put on some great speed events, rallies, and maybe even racing!

Some Rallies such as the Jim Clark run on closed roads. Where roads are closed now it is always outside of England, ie Isle of Man, Scotland ,Northern Ireland, Guernsey and Jersey.

Kop Hill at princes Risborough was close for a "demonstration" event a few weeks ago to celebrate the 100th anniversary of it's hillclmb. It was here that a car went into the crowd and caused the stopping of closed roads.

Can I clarify - the car went off the road (a Bugatti driven by a student from Oxford in 1925! The hill had been in use from 1910 to 1925 very successfully until the incident. No-one was killed but sufficient injuries occurred to make the government place the ban for England.

Birmingham Superprix required an act of Parliament in order for it to be run.

Let's hope the MSA is successful in its lobbying of all the political parties and that events such as Kop Hill help persuade the government it would be the right thing to do

If anyone wants to see just how successful it was have a look at http://www.kophillclimb.org.uk/

•A record 8000 spectators over the two days.
•An unequalled range of 350 veteran, vintage, classic vehicles with invited super-cars roaring up the hill.
•Over 200 classic/club cars on display in the paddock.
•A huge boost to our charities.

Not just these

New Brighton prom gets closed for a rally each year and has also been closed for sprints

Long may it last

I remember a number of years ago marshalling the Endyke Kart GP(I think thats correct) in the city centre of Hull. I think it was all non gearbox classes and I was on the post in front of the town hall. Fire brigade intervened during the meeting as the fire alarms whent off in the hall.
Good news to get some of these events back and possibly new ones.

Used to be used for motorcycle races - the last one was in 2001.

Red Bull once did a kart street race in Cardiff using a track set out around the Bay area... It was quite well attended but it only happened once due to the number of damaged karts by the end of the event!

Does anyone remeber when they ran a F1 car though some stretch of London? They had to close the roads for that!

Yes, the only English closed Road rally I know of, which I compete on is the New Brighton Promenade Stages Rally held every year.
They used to do sprinting, but sadly no more...

I really hope that the government look very closely at this as it can bring in so much to the local authority and not just in money terms either.
