Toughest opposition?
Michael Schumacher's F1 career has spanned 1991 to 2003+
That's 6 WDCs in 13 years. Who has provided the toughest opposition to him winning more? |

Well, statistically it's Hakkinen and none of the others have presented much trouble since, including Mika. Prost retired after winning 93 - I'm sure he would have presnted a greater challenge.
I think MS himself has greater respect for JPM than any of the others on the list but thats just a hunch... |

MS had far greater respect for Senna (as a role model/target) and Mika (as a true rival).
Unfortunately, Senna left early, otherwise, it would be the toughest opponent that Michael face. Anybody can beat Michael if their cars are miles better, hence i don't consider JV, a fine racer, he is, as a tough competitor. 97 Ferrari was finding it's feet, and JV/Williams was nowhere in 98. Same thing as Berger, the cars just din't provide competiton. It's a pity that Prost and Mansell all are near the end of their career when Michael started. It deprived us the fair comparison we yearn between the new great vs the old greats. And unfortunately, it seems like the same as repeated now with JPM/Kimi/Alonso with Michael So i'd say Mika would be the real opposition for Michael, with similar cars/age/experience |

Mika. I agree. Also they had the odd good race before F1 too.
Apart from the odd race, Prost and Senna were never in direct opposition (if you see what I mean) to Schumacher as he was new and building up. |

Mika IMO, some great battles, not only in the race, but also for pole IIRC.

I voted senna then read the first post (doh) so now I would say Mika as senna would have challenged for MS's first title in 1994 but was sadly taken...

Have to say Mika, at the moment. The only driver he's lost 2 WDC's to (although 1 of them was due to a broken leg on Michaels part).
However, IF Michael decides to call it a day, due in part to JPM and/or Kimi (or visa-versa) beating him to the WDC then one, or both of them would have to be a possibility. |

Has to be Mika, although I wish I could sit here now and type Ayrtons name.
The Mika Vs. Michael rivalry was noteable for its distinct fairness (except for a brief moment at Spa in 2000). It was thoroughly enjoyable.....if only Mika had more prolonged motivation for success. |

Mika. Faster than Michael over a single lap, but didn't have the mental toughness to beat him consistently.

Mika may have been in the CAR that caused MS the most trouble, but I do not believe HE was the biggest competitor.

Thus far, it is Mika who had consistently been there for Michael to fight against. It's like Prost was in Senna's time, Mika was in Michael's.
JPM and Kimi may be the young hotshots, but it would be almost similar to comparing them to Michael in Mansell/Prost times. |

I think mika, the year at spa where they went either side of the back marker after eau rouge springs to mind.

i think i read in Autosport that Mikka was the only tital rival the Schumacher ever respected (oviously excluding Senna)
It has to be Mikka, he was the only one that has taken moer than one title of TGF. |

Whilst i agree with you that Mika was proberbly the only rival Michael respected. I think it's fair to say that Mika only took the second title because of Michaels accident at Silverstone.
But hey, history shows that he won it, just as history shows that James Hunt won in 76. Last edited by Mr V; 15 Jan 2004 at 16:07. |

I suppose Jacques and Mika each stopped him once in a straight fight so it's between them.
Which is different from saying who has had the best year during Michael's career. Most of them didn't win the championship with their performance: Frentzen in '95 and '99; Panis in '97; Hill in '96; Villeneuve in 2000 etc. |
