Who is the better Champ Car Announcer?
I just wanted to see people's opinions on who you thought is a better Champ Car announcer: Rick Benjamin or Bob Varsha?

That's a no brainer.
The Edmonton race was broadcast in Canada by Global. They hired Paul Page. He was clearly not 100% up on CC, but for all his faults I thought he was more effective. I know he's a contriversal figure because of his history of incompetance, but when it's all said and done he's certainly not the worst guy out there. |

I like Varsha, however I don' t recall him ever doing a Champ Car race.

Varsha did all the races when CART was on speed before Spike.

Varsha is one of the best out there. Rick Benjamin isn't bad or anything, but he's nowhere near the level of Varsha.

Varsha also did CART on ABC with Danny Sulliven. That was after the period where Page and Bobby Unser (shudder) did it, but before the period where it was Page and Johnstone.

Paul Page still holds a world record -- he managed to say "MichaelAndretti" six times in five minutes! It was that race where Mikey ran over one of his pit crew (and so did de Ferran, but Gil retired mmediately and Mikey kept running). I don't know about you but I was impressed!
I like Bob Varsha -- his voice is smoother and easier to listen to. But anybody is better than Rick DiBruhl. |

I rememebr when Bobby Unser and Sam Posey use to call races for ABC. Posey didn't know ANYTHING and Unser had to keep correcting him.
No, Sam....................... |

Jeremy Shaw as the "expert", with Ben Edwards leading the commentary.

I don't mind Jeremy when he does the qualifying coverege on Race Director but I find him a little boring and prefer to listern for the race the U.S. commentaters.

I actually like it when commentators shut up for awhile and just let us enjoy the race. I realize most people don't know as much as we do about the sport, but sometimes it seems like commentators talk just for the sake for filling the airwaves. DD comes to mind...but this post isn't about him, so I digress

That's the dream team. That duo helped me to learn and love CART back in 1998 or so. |

Agreed on Ben Edward & Jeremy Shaw. When was the last year they both commentated together for ChampCar/CART races?

I gotta go with Paul Page. He was the voice for CART at its peak. Tracy, Andretti's, Villenueuve, Mansell... Not perfect, but the voice equals Champ Car to me. It was great to hear him again doing the Edmonton race on Global.
Bob Varsha is a close second for me. I go with Varsha and Derek Daley doing the color:-) I drink a lot though, so I might not remember my vote tomorrow! Oh yeah, it will be documented here!!! |

I think Bob Varsha and Alex Zanardi would be the dream team!
Can you imagine Alex in the commentary box!? |
