Best List 1a Tyres

Hi All,

I am sorry if this is in the wrong place, I have searched the forums and can't find any advice.

I have made a schoolboy error and have only just realised that my class only allows List 1a tyres. Which tyres would be the best to use? I notice that many people use Yoko A539's, and Bridgestone Re720's. I am after them in 185/60-13.

Thanks in advance

My series uses Yoko A539s in that size. They are much better than some of the 1A tyres we've specified in the past (chunks of tread don't fall off them...) though lap times suggest that they aren't quite as fast at some circuits as the previous tyres - I put this down to the fact they are 60-profile and the others were 70-profile, giving better gearing. As they are more a race orientated tyre than some other 1As, they do respond well to be shaved down to 4 or 5mm (George Polley Motorsport will do this for an extra tenner) which stops them going off so badly after 15 mins. With full tread, they are pretty good in the wet.

Are those Bridgestone's still available? There was a "magic" Bridgestone 1A tyre that had softer tread in the layer beneath, but they are no longer available IIRC. Hillclimbs and sprinters may be able to give more info, as they are often forced to use 1A tyres, but I've found there's no a great deal of different between them - certainly nowhere near as much as the variation between 1B tyres.

Toyo 888's are a good choice, not bad a price, not bad in wet and last reasonably. I dont feel they need shaving either.

yeah sorry misread post, well in that case try Falken, or the Toyo road tyre, both good and good value and yes shaving will make them last a lot longer as the blocks of tread don't skirm around and overheat. I remember going to a track day once and a brand new Noble I was having a dice with on a concrete airfield venue me on shaved Falkens him on whatever they came with from the factory and after the session his were all chunked up and screwed and mine were perfect.

1A tyres are not for racing on. They are designed for life, safety and potholes.
In my early hillclimb years we could only run 1A's and the Bridgestone Pole Positions (2 grades of rubber) were simply the best. We all ran on them. When they were 2/3's down they were very good in all conditions.

My last set were Marangoni's, the 'Italian Avon' almost, and were great in the wet, average in the dry and didn't last. Cheap though.

1b's are an entirely different kettle of fish and far more focused as you would expect.

Surprised nobody has asked which 1B is the best!

best for what? Sprints & hillclimbs need tyres that work when cold as they never get hot, races are different, then again a tyre that goes off after 10 laps is no good for a 1 hour enduro, horses for courses.

"1A tyres are not for racing on. " - it depends; I raced around Europe for 3 years on a cheap (control) Bridgestone 1A tyre, 30 quid each and buffed down to 3 mm they would last a season, same for everyone so not a problem . Also it meant we weren't overstressing 40 year old components with modern ultra-sticky stuff. Thus avoiding the need to 're-engineer' uprights in modern materials at vast expense (like some continuation cars do)

I used to use Firestones on the road - depends what you're after though, I was after a dual purpose tyre for occasional sprinting and everyday road use. They lasted 2 years [26000 miles or so] on the road. Still got a few kicking around somewhere now, as now have a whole shed of tyres!

From my experience of racing on road tyres, Toyo Proxes are a damn good tyre. They work well in the wet too. What's more, they're a cheap tyre compared to other brands.

I always had them shaved to 4mm too...

A slight Hi-Jack....... best 1b

Sorry to hi-jack this thread slightly, but I have tried a quick search with regards best list 1b tyres and it came up with posts from 2007.

So........ what do you guys rate as the best list 1b tyres?

I currently use Yoko 32's and find them a good all round tyre, however someone told me about the Silverston 1b which they had heard was very good, however I have to run 16" wheels and Silverstone don't seem to do their tyre in that size.

Any thoughts?

Yoko 032Rs are an obsolete tyre - its replacement, Yoko 048R, is quite a bit faster. But I hear that Toyo (?) 888s are faster still (all based on 13" on Sevens).

Does anybody know what profile the Toyo 888's are?

My series has to race with a mininuim of 60 profile or higher and I'm trying to decide on the Yoko A048's or the Toyos......

I have 18x 35 profile 888's on the Camaro and 40 profile on the front, they have a fair range of sizes.

thanks Al, I've now looked into it a bit more. I run 5 inch wheels 175 60 R13, the Toyos are only availble in 185 60 R13 so I'll probably be getting the Yokos.

When you say list 1bs, we must assume that you are talking about treaded tyres, I am sure that there are some slicks in the list 1b category. Mpst people tend to either have Toyos or Yokos.

Slicks in 1B ??
I believe 1B is for road-legal tyres designed for competition use; slicks can never be road legal

moulded slicks like the maxsport RB5 are road legal though you would have to be bloody brave to use them on the road! I think they qualify on the 17%? tread rule but they are on list 1B for 2010. i bet they are seriously fast.
