Autosport are reporting that the Algarve circuit in Portugal is a possibility for a new GP. Can't see it really opens up new markets, but we'll see.

Algrave is (as of last September) a FIA Grade 2 circuit, so some upgrades would presumably be necessary to host a F1 race. Not sure how extensive/expensive they would be.

They've already hosted F1 testing, so I imagine it wouldn't take too much work.

I quite like a bit of the pit strategy bingo but I haven't seen much mediocrity coming out on top, plus there's the variety of circuits, which F1 doesn't have.

It had the old Grade 1T rating which the FIA ave now done away with. So I'd suggest the track is up to scratch, and it's either the spectator areas or paddock that need a little attention.

That swoop downhill into T1 and along to T2 would be interesting with a grid of F1's!!

The FIA granted a Grade 1-T license and a number of teams tested back in December 2008 and in January 2009. Lando Norris's tested there with McLaren F1 last week.

Also the circuit is kinda in the middle of nowhere, but there's plenty of width to the circuit, which should be good for overtaking

Ricard hoping for a late June early July slot for next year. Traditional period for the French GP to be held. Wouldn't be right any other time although location normally means good weather all year round.

Portimao, is without doubt the best "modern" track suited for F1.

We saw it at Magny Cours, that too was in the middle of nowhere, which is why it had problems attracting spectators

thinking back, issues surrounding its remoteness and lack of hotels only became a talking point when the sanctioning fees and ticket prices started going through the roof and the new tilke tracks emerged in the mid 2000s.

probably a bit revisionist on my part but it always seemed really well attended in the 90s before the greed of F1 went full blown.

A big blow for the proposed Circuit of Wales, recently.

The Welsh government has withdrawn support for it, certainly from a financial point of view, at a recent cabinet meeting. They have already spent about £10 million of taxpayers' money on this "project" since 2011, yet the developers behind the scheme, HoVDC, haven't even purchased all the land that would be required, and has still to get planning consent for the track.

How long HoVDC can avoid bankruptcy is open to question as they have a binding contract to host MotoGPs up until 2019, and are having to hire Silverstone in lieu of their own circuit. And that arrangement has led to a loss for the last two years, possibly indirectly subsidised by taxpayers.

from the article:

Jonathan Neale, Chief Operating Officer, McLaren Technology Group, said:

“Why not? Why not bring Formula 1 to the streets of Woking? Obviously, aside from the huge social and financial commitment needed to set up the infrastructure, re-profile roads, re-lay Tarmac, fit miles of Armco, build grandstands, pay for race-hosting fees and gain approval and sign-off from the FIA, we don’t see any barriers to our vision.

“In an era that’s often seen as being hemmed in by bureaucracy and narrow-mindedness, that’s actually very refreshing.”

sounds like Mclaren are just having a bit of fun during the summer break! all its missing is a place for Alonso to set up his deck chair!

i wonder if this is at all related to a number of reddit posts over the past few days where members of the F1 subreddit forum over there are having some fun making up proposed tracks in their respective hometowns?

Yes, Charlie Whiting was inspecting Buenos Aires and said that he is a lover of the Circuit Number 12 (with the 2 long straight and the Salotto curvy)
Now it's close to be grade 3 for circuits 6, 7, 8 or 9.
And it will require a lot of work and investment to reach grade 1.

Yes, the circuit 12 is super fast in the style of Monza and much closer than the circuit 15 that used for the formula 1 from 1971 to 1981 and of course much more attractive than the Mickey Mouse (number 6) used from 1995 to 1998.

Not quite, the 1974-81 version used the infield bit as well

I doubt that Formula 1 would use the fast Salotto corner. They would add a chicane, hairpin or something to have overtaking.

That would ruin the Salotto corner. Leave it as it is, it needs to be challenging.
