doug911 should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Best driver never to win the world championship

I'm sure this question has been asked but I failed to find a thread!

I'm thinking it has to be Ronnie Peterson, Stirling Moss or Gilles Villeneuve but I can't decide which!

http://tentenths.com/forum/showthrea...ver+To+Win+WDC

That instantly came up. There will be others (especially when one takes in the debate emerging within threads without this topic as title).

Anyway, I think it is rather impossible to answer this. Much like the "Greatest Ever" debate, the best we could ever hope for is "Best of X-Generation Never To Win WDC".

Even then, it is rather hard.

Ultimately, the best we could hope to do is produce the "Group of The Best Never To Win".

The three you mention above would, IMO, most certainly fit into the latter classification.

I wouldn't worry...if debates/conversations were not repeated...we would run out of things to talk about...

Stirling Moss. Winningest driver never to win the title. I think that should speak volumes in itself.

On pure talent, Gilles Villeneuve. Could have won in 1979 had he not played the perfect team-mate to Jody Scheckter. May have won in 1982 had cruel fate not intervened...

I can't see past Villeneuve and Moss, to be honest.

How about the best driver never to win a Grand Prix? Chris Amon.

You can't argue against Villenuve or Moss. But I'd make a case for Ickx, if he focused his career more so on F1 he defantley would have won a title. He drove the doors of of anything. IMO

Stirling Moss, Jacky Ickx & Gilles Villeneuve ... those three rate instantly and most glaringly. The talent in that group is unbelievable ... no less so that neither won a WDC.

What about Stefan Bellof, he wasn't really around long enough in F1 for people to judge him I guess, but the guy was fantastically fast !!!! And like Villeneuve far to brave.

Sir Stirling and Gilles. I was lucky enough to see Stirling at his peak several times and was an Atlantic crewman/crew chief when Gilles ran in Atlantics.

In my opinion those two and Ronnie Peterson, maybe, are the only ones in contention. Until recently I would not have considered anyone other than Moss.

I suppose you could say he had more shots at it than, say, Gilles, but in my view he was peerless.

Personally I would go for Ickx. If I remember rightly he got close to winning it in his first year.

Peterson, Villeneuve and Bellof all deserved it, but sadly died before all the final pieces fell into place.

thats the truth for sure, add to that my knowledge of F1 prior to 1990 is limited, so for sure i hear about the likes of GV and SM and others but all i really know about them is what i've read or seen clips. so its hard for me to comment on them.

so for my years of watching F1, i would have to pick Heinz-Harald Frentzen.

i dont know why, but certainly if he came to Williams in 1994/5? he would have had 3 years in the most dominant car and his chances would have been there, but he chose to be loyal and stay with Sauber. he was awesome in 99 in a Jordan and then with Prost it all went away.
maybe it was just that i felt he was the underdog whose career was in many ways the exact opposite of MS which only added to my feelings that given better chances he could have achieved so much more. so for me hes the most deserving (if not the best) of the last 15-20 years to have not won the WDC.
