Funnily enough that MG looks kind of familiar ? I might even have some photos of it as I was taking photos of some of the cars as I followed the cars around with my dad. Although this might have been just a few years to early. |

Hi guys I'm new on the site and joined because i found it after a google search for my uncle! My uncle, Adrian Gilbert, raced a blue Lotus Europa in the Modsports during the 70's. He still has the car in outstanding condition in his garage in London. It's been there since it's last race, whenever that was. I'm going to try and get him to give it to me so I can track it now!!!

nice pix. we share a name and and interest though i'm merely a pedestrian.
If i had some spare £££ i'd bung some Rob Reere's way . he does'nt even need alot to get the beast up and running. Oh BTW John Plastic Pearsons was from my memory actually a hard top made of fibreglass, that looked like a soft top.i remember being v suprised by that. its last and quickest incarnation it was a roadster, and painted blue. Raced for overall honours with the last incarnation of the beddington V 12 E , a famous elan(cant remember who) and a sort of lotus 7, which was the ultimate modsports car. However my memory aint what it used to be as i cant get me head round Brian Hough fatal crash being as early as '73. great thread |

Jon Fletcher's Elan
Quote:
I think you may have got the wrong end of the stick, the Elan is still well and truly in Jon's possession it’s been rebuilt to the original spec as when Jackie Stewart raced it for Chequered Flag. He is currently rebuilding the Modsports version with the red roof and a replica 26R lotus Elan. Jon did sell the old Z28 Camaro for at the time a good price. The guy who bought it blew the engine on the grid at Brands. The Elan has not seen much action over the last 20 years but it has been round the targa flora and the odd outing at Silverstone for the BRDC member’s parade. |

Could somebody tell me please if anyone has seriously tried, through one of the recognised clubs to get a classic modsports class together so cars like these , or cars built to the same period specification can race?

I'm based at Dalton Barracks in Abingdon and there is a track day every last friday of the month and last time there was a group of chaps from Oxford racing an old MG Midge from the modsports! It wa red and they said it hadn't run in seven odd years! Was pretty damned quick!

I had a couple of Modsports Midgets back in the late 1970s. The first, which I converted from my road car went on to compete in hillclimbs, the second, (which was built by a friend, and had coil spring suspension) ended up in Japan, where it was exported as I understand by Keith Ripp.

Modsport Midgets
Class A cars in the MGCC MG Midget Challenge are effectively mod-sport cars. The class is very competative. They are great fun to drive, very quick and reasonably economic. All in all a great 'bang for your buck'
The Challenge is looking forward to its 35th year in 2010 - see the website http://www.mgmidgetchallenge.co.uk/ A series to race with other modsports would be great. Any offers Masters, HSCC? |

The 360 MRC is actively looking at something along these lines but not confined to AH/MG. Although we're mainly focussed on endurance racing, it doesn't all have to be 6 hours!
We're thinking along the lines of 1, 2 or 3 hour races as well as 6 and the logic here is that longer races produce less circuit downtime and the facility for shared drives all of which produce competitive racing at an affordable entry fee. We've already got interest but need a few more to make it work financially, so the rest is up to you. |

I have tried to interest the CSCC in this sort of idea, as we don't have any series for very modified cars (I know I'll get flamed for that but i'm talking about big arches & wings etc etc!!!). I was thinking of a series of 40 min races for one or two drivers ('cause thats what we do) for Modsports/ Saloons & the sorts of cars that use to populate the AMOC Intermarque or Super GT series; maybe even few "Special Saloons" (Sports-Saloon Libre, if you like), but no joy. Shame, if anone is interested then let me know, but we'd need to be convinced that there was a regular gridful of cars that would race.

I cetainly hope that Johngee's races come off, although I don't have a suitable car myself. Another alternative home for the sort of cars I mentioned, inc modsports/saloons, could be the SR & GT series.

The club that does finally start running a championship for special saloons /modsports will be on to a winner the interest in this type of car is phenomenal .There are a lot of classic ss/ms cars out there doing nothing as there is no were to race them ,its crying out for a club to to organise a group of races it could be made into a real winner

It is hoped that this event will be free to enter )although you'll probably have to join the CSCC @ £35 pa) and it is most likely to be a 20 min Sprint event rather than the usual 40 min races that the CSCC runs! It is also hoped that interest will prove to be great enough to have another race at the end of the season & to start a regular series for next year. This revival event is also mentioned in the Special Saloon threads. Last edited by andy97; 31 Jan 2011 at 14:03. |
