4-5/11/1989 - South Australia Cup - Adelaide Grand Prix Circuit, SA
Yokohama Cup
Adelaide Grand Prix Circuit, SA (4-5/11/1989) Circuit Length: 3.78 km A bumper entry for the final touring car races of the year, though not all would make it. The format of the meeting had changed for the tourers, with two short sprints on the programme instead of the previous 120-km race on the Saturday. Entry List:
Race 1 (4/11/1989) Race Distance: 9 laps (15 laps scheduled, race distance reduced due to accident during first start) Weather: Sunny A crash and bash affair, this one. Skaife was the first domino to fall, getting punted into the fence as the field exited the chicane on the first lap. The damage ended his weekend. Brock led from Longhurst, Seton, Miedecke, Bowe and Johnson. Bowe was struggling with a misfire, which eventually caused his to spin into the wall when the car cut out mid-corner. Coming down to the final hairpin for the third time, Johnson tapped the back of Miedecke, sending the Kenwood Sierra hard left into the wall. Meanwhile further around the corner, Bond had a half-spin and was collected by Percy. The race was red-flagged as marshalls put out a fire at the front of Miedecke's car, while Miedecke himself went back to the pits to confront Johnson. Miedecke was scheduled to air-freight his car to Fuji for the Intertec 500, but the damage curtailed the plans. Sadly, it would be the last hurrah for Miedecke's independent efforts. He signed a deal to race for Brock in NZ and for 1990, soon putting the Kenwood Sierra on the market and selling the team to Kevin Waldock. Brock led away from the restart while Johnson made his way into second past Longhurst and Seton down Brabham Straight. Longhurst soon found himself unchallanged out in front as first Brock then Johnson spun out of the lead, and Seton retired with a broken half-shaft. He went on to win the shortened race from a recovering Brock and Percy.
Heat 2 (5/11/1989) Race Distance: 10 laps Weather: Rain The foul weather that plagued the F1 race also afflicted the touring car race, the rain starting to fall with the cars already on the grid. Richards got the jump from the second row to lead early, before Longhurst and Bond passed the Nissan on Brabham Straight. I've haven't seen this race since it happened, and the report in AMRY isn't very extensive, just saying that this race was considerably less incident-packed compared to the previous day.

What was the significance of "I.C.L Racing" being the entrant of the Grice car at Bathurst in '88 and at Winton and Bathurst in 1989? It was still the same Roadways team under Les Small as had been the case in 1987 wasn't it?

ICL Racing was the entrant of both cars in 1988. Both were built by Les Small for Garry Rogers, presumably ICL Racing Pty Ltd was Rogers' company.
The Roadways team was disbanded at the end of 1987 when Grice went to Europe with Nissan. While the 1988 and 1989 entries were crewed by mainly ex Roadways personnel including Les Small as team manager I think it was still referred to as Roadways out of habit, bit like Brock's team was still referred to as the HDT after 1987. |

I'm pretty sure Roadways was kept together. They had a bit of work from privateer Commodore teams, plus a lot of work courtesy of the new AUSCAR category. IIRC they ran Steve Harrington's AUSCAR efforts and built a brand new VN AUSCAR for Grice in 1989.

Unless I am very much mistaken, Roadways Pty Limited was a Tasmanian ashphalt and contracting company associated with the Harrington family. Indeed the Roadways brand appeared on the cars of Mr Grice, especially when Mr Harrington drove either the primary or secondary cars for that team
In 1986, the 'Roadways of Tasmania' brand appeared on the grille of the Bathurst winning Grice VK.. The racing team became known as Roadways Racing Services, presumably borne out of I.C.L. Racing P/L, Here which seems to have evolved from Mr Browne's ReCar Racing equipe. ReCar was a Grice sponsor for many years, as car owner in the Group C days, to sponsor on the Group A VL Commodore in the late 1980s Interestingly Roadways Pty Ltd is still in existence, Here and were sponsors of Sam Walter's Fujitsu series, and endurance series racing in the last few years |

I was under the impression that Les Small branched out and ran his own engineering business in much the same way Larry Perkins did after he left the employ of HDT. Certainly in 1988 he was busy not only building 2 new VLs for Garry Rogers, but upgrading older cars to the new TWR specs for a number of privateers.
He did became a major supplier to the Auscar field. In 1994 he built up an EB Falcon supercar, but never raced it before selling it. Recall that he was working for Paul Morris a few years ago at the same time as his son James was Russell Ingall's engineer. |

It was Colin Bond's car from the 1988 ATCC. The car was one of the original OXO Sierras, originally driven by Don Smith in 1987. The car was purchased mid-season by John Giddings who stepped into the driver's seat for the rest of the ATCC, joined for the enduros by Bruce Stewart.
Colin Bond missed out on a new Sierra shell at the start of 1988 and did a deal to use Giddings car for the ATCC while he waited to build his own car. Bond's car was ready for the enduros, so Giddings drove his car with Bruce Stewart in the enduros in Caltex colours. After that, the car was put up for sale. After Bathurst 1988, the car's only race appearance (that I can find) is at that AGP support race. One of our forum members, bent65, now owns the car (http://tentenths.com/forum/showpost....&postcount=339). htc, do you have any more info on Les Swallow or his one-off appearance at the AGP meet? |

Just got a copy of race 1, I will have it on youtube sometime in the next few weeks. Peter Doulman managed to basically drive over the bonnet of Laurie Nelson's Mustang.

Has anyone seen any footage of Race 2 on the Sunday of the 1989 AGP support race? It got "interesting" when it started raining just after we lined up on the grid!

Was there enough cars in the Perkins/TWR setup available at the time for 3 to actually be run at that meeting? |

"The Commodore ranks were led by the factory cars driven by Win Percy and Neil Crompton, leaving Larry Perkins a somewhat disgruntled onlooker for the weekend. Percy ran the same car that he and Perkins shared at Bathurst, while Crompton (ran) Perkins' own car in place of the old 'Herbie Clips' car he ran at the 'Mount', that car having been sold by HSV." |

Thanks for the info.
The reason I ask is a friend has purchased an ex Herbie clips car and it is currently still in 1989 HRT colours and the logbook has an entry for the AGP in 1989 so on the hunt for info |

"Meanwhile, the number 7 VL Commodore, raced by Percy & Crompton at Bathurst, has been sold to a racing team in Indonesia, and will be raced this weekend in a touring car street race by - of all people - the son of the President of Indonesia! "John Harvey and Larry Perkins will be travelling to Indonesia to surpervise the car's first outing." Photo here from Auto Action, Dec 22 1989 showing a car in HRT colours: http://i1179.photobucket.com/albums/...psf0bba6f5.jpg Edit: Just thinking that if the above pair of articles are about the same car, then it's interesting that the second article mentions the car returning to Melbourne for repairs, possibly sometime around late Oct. So a trip to Adelaide in Nov to get a stamp in the log book while testing the repairs during a practice session is a possibility. Last edited by MalcolmC; 28 Jan 2013 at 07:41.
