The gap in the barriers there is to allow the vehicles to cross the track after lap 1. It almost looks like Wehrlein forgot if it was lap 1 or 2, didn't know if he should cross over the track, didn't commit to either and just ploughed through the barrier. His car was completely straightened out for 2-3 seconds before he hit the barrier. It reminds me of the time Grosjean drove into the back of Webber at Suzuka - the whole world seen the accident was going to happen, and no attempt what-so-ever was made to avoid it - he just ploughed into the back of him. Absolutely zero situational awareness. Same issue here - no idea what he was doing, so did nothing and crashed. Hardly a good advert for his race craft.
This is where he runs wide and hits the first line of foam blocks on the exit of the final corner.
This one is where he hits the second segment of foam blocks, you can clearly see how the impact kicked the front weels into opposite lock, making the car veer to the right.

He clearly ran wide, hit the blocks on the exit, then he hit the second set blocks and thus the car veered off to the right into Massa.
I don't feel this is such a bizarre crash at all, maybe a bit overzealous, but not bizarre in the least.

I certainly don't have any idea where you're getting the concrete blocks thing from.

Sorry don't agree. He had 2 full seconds to react and did nothing. If he was out of control due to tap on the barrier then why did he not lift and why was there no steering input? He just kept his foot in and went straight into the foam blocks.

He might be tapped the foam barrier but that doesn't make any difference. There's 2 full seconds before the impact for him to decide what to do, where he takes literally no action and make no attempt to avoid it. The beauty of the open car and above camera view is you can see exactly what he was doing, or rather in this case, what he wasn't doing. Absolutely zero awareness of why was going on and just floored it into solid objects.

The concrete blocks I refer to are protecting the light gantry on the exit of that corner. Every other car which ran wide there has hit those (Kanaan and Massa yesterday, Helio almost did today). If he managed to miss the concrete blocks that everyone else is hitting then he has his corner trajectory completely different to everyone else's. You shouldn't be running wide that far down the road.

Whether he ran wide or not doesn't matter. He didn't even try and avoid the accident. I think it's far more likely he completely forgot if he was meant to cross the track or not. And the weird interview he did afterwards where he stood there with a blank look on his face, suggests he also had no idea what he was meant to be doing.

Well then, let's just agree to disagree then, as I don't dislike Wehrlein enough to look that far into this incident.

I don't dislike him either. I spent half this thread arguing he should be put in the Mercedes car. I just think it was a completely stupid accident.

Vettel just schooled everyone in the RoC. It all felt a bit bias towards the American teams tbh but Vettel managed it without Werhelim anyway.

I liked the other drivers reaction - he's done it again, oh well. Bemused smirk.
And Massa again shows his strong point - straight out of the car to assist.

Is someone going to write another open letter to Toto Wolff confirming that Bottas was the right choice over Wehrlein?

Massa got a bit screwed by the stewards. Ran wide at the final corner (a proper run wide, not a mind blank one), clipped the concrete block. He won his race, but was given a 5 second penalty for the hit. Ended up knocking him out. A bit harsh really.
