Multi Discipline Marshaling
Having enjoyed my first day of tarmac rally marshaling at Pembrey yesterday for the Gwendreath Valley Motor Club.I was wondering why there seemed to be so few race marshals present and is this the norm for different discipline events nationwide.
Previous to yesterday i thought there would be long gaps between each car but was pleaseantly surprised to find they turned up every 30 seconds and with some of the cars being slower than the others this made for entertaining viewing at the temporary chicane before the pit entrance. Roll on next year |

daviesfever,
The other side of the coin is rally marshals at circuits, next time you go to a circuit ask around. They don't do roundy, roundy stuff!! And before you ask, I marshal any form of motorsport! |

Well I marshalled a sporting trial yesterday as a change from speed hillclimbs & had a brilliant day.

I did the Robin Hood stages on Saturday night-all alone in a pitch black forest with an assortment of Escorts going by at angles not associatated with the direction of the stage!

Woah, thats a bit strong, certaintly 99% of the BRMC marshals in the north west are regular Track Marshals, the fire wagons at OP would lack most of thier crews if, they "Didnt do roundy roundy" Ian Briggs, Brown "X" Blue/Red |

I do both and they each have there own apeal. Whilst I know it is not for everyone. I think you will be quite suprised at the number of marshals that do both.

I do see one thing on the horizon. And that is that if numbers continue their upsetting downward trend, those of us that are left are going to have to become more open minded about other disciplines that we haven't traditionally supported. And in turn, being welcoming to our colleagues who visit from other disciplines is going to have to a matter of greater importance.

For me it's easy, if it's got an engine, I'll Marshal it. I Clerk/Steward/Observe/I.O/Flag & Incident cars, I marshal circuit bikes & Motocross, Sprints, Hill Climbs & Rallies. But best of all I stand on Hyde Park corner with a couple of coppers on the first Sunday of every November for the London - Brighton.

I used to do a few rallies, but then the cars started going FWD (less fun), getting too fast (less safe) and the spectators became less respectful of my experience compared with their lack of it, so I dropped it to just the Rally GB. Then that retreated into furthest Wales and I found it no loss to stop doing them. At the same time I started doing more circuits and the group that used to go out rallying dispersed slowly and that was it. I guess it left me rather than the other way around. I wouldn't say never, though, and I have the greatest admiration for people who can drive like that between trees on mud.

Hi Woolley
I think you went the wrong way with your rallying. I gave up the rally of south Wales car parks about 8 years ago (with one exception due to a late plea). My rallying concentrates on club and national events and remains great fun. Events so far this year are one sporting trial and a tarmac single-venue rally. Weekend after next is the first race. Regards Jim |

It's seems local clubs have a thing about the colour orange. Maybe I should have put it better to start with. Would it be the lack of discipline for rally marshals that puts off circuit marshals attending? I have also marshaled non circuit sprints for a number of years, where it's anyone turn up and marshal affair, again a lack of discipline compared with circuits. |

Ah, well, perhaps it is the lack of Dicipline that I find one of the most appealing things about Rally Marshaling!
However there is a pretty well defined Grading system for BRMC Rally Marshals, it is a lot more regimented than the Circuit cards, and I intend to keep unless something better comes along, which despite the MSAs "Register of rally Marshals" Something I think the BMMC as a whole needs to look at given the proposed changes to the circuit grading system..... Sorry, bit off topic there, as to Motor Clubs, most local clubs do tend towards rallies Autotests etc, the reason being that most Racing is under the Auspecies of the racing Clubs such as the BRSCC etc, so its not surprising there is little interest in Circuit Marshaling, the best answer for marshals is to join THE Marshals Club. Final thought, we all have people we privatly rate as good Marshals, people we are happier on post with than others, whilst thinking this through it struck me that most of the people whom I rate do all kinds of marshaling, not just Circuits, Hhmmmm |

I did the last RAC rally that was held at Cheltenham and to be honest I didnt much like having to sign on and be on post 2 hours before the first car came through......And that was only the 00 car (think it was 00 anyway....may have been 000 not sure now ) ...
I dare say club rallies are far far different but I dont really get much time what with my hillclimbing commitments and a shortage of time and money... I had used to do sporting trials at the start of the year but really didnt like being up to my armpits in mud ... |

My first event marshalling was a sprint and was going to do first rally this weekend but it's been cancelled Being a member of a motorclub is how I started marshalling, which as someone said above earlier is PCTs, sprints, autotests, 12 cars etc etc. Will try and marshal this year but also want to compete so can't win! Not really too interested in circuit marshalling - not sure why just not too keen on it, might enjoy it, but will see at some point I guess.
