Well seems a fair compromise, won’t get too distracted from F1 because of it

Maybe Alonso's Toyota deal is also his 'plan B' if he decides to retire* from F1 at the end of 2018....???
*if the 2018 McLaren-Renault package won't be able to perform significantly better than the previous Honda engined ones. |

motorsport.com reporting that Toyota is simulating problems and random failures in testing to prepare for Le Mans. In the article they also say that Toyota is targeting 11-lap stints with 7 or 8 more pit stops this year!

What is your view of the list that has just been presented to you? " I'm quite surprised by the number of LMP1 on the list and it's a very nice plateau. We will have eight cars against us, which is good news. We do not know the level of performance of our competitors at all. By cons, we did not expect to have 30 GTE, so we will change our traffic simulations. " Not sure what he expected, and it's only one more than we had last year. |

Each Lap will be 1sec/Lap of advantage towards toyota according to fuel regulation this year. (the pit stop will be alot different since tire change will be 2 wheels at the time while refueling. this will be a key to make a huge difference!) |

I think a lot of people were expecting more LMP2s and less GTE Ams, as certain rage quits over the entry list also imply. There's only 15 GTE Am cars racing anywhere this year and 13 of them are at Le Mans, and the 6 of the 9 announced reserves were LMP2 cars.

Pascal Vasselon said they are simulating problems and unexpected situations, and training on that area too while testing the car.
More tests next week at Portimao. Source in spanish |

We don't know exactly until we know how much time each pit stop takes for the hybrids and non hybrid cars. At Le Mans, it means 33 pit stops for the hybrids, and 36 for the non hybrid cars if we compare with 2017 laps done...... |

I think they're going to be on the pace in the later rounds, but Spa might be a good idea too since you can use the Le Mans spec cars. I guess we'll have an idea of what to expect in terms of pace differences.

I expect Toyota hiding / sandbagging heavily in Spa, to go to FIA/ACO and ask for a performance reduction for the privateers...
Thy are probably working on a strategy to do this without this being recognized on the data... |

IMO performance reduction for privateers is 100% given, they published those numbers to attract more entries, now that they are all "locked in" equalisation is inevitable.
Toyota doesn't need to sandbag, actually they can't sandbag because we all know what times they (and Porsche) achieved in 2016 at Paul Ricard. |

They don't sound particularly worried about the opposition...

Well, without Porsche developing their car even more, Toyota can do roughly the same pace. And maybe has to deal with this? https://www.motorsport.com/wec/news/...nalty-1004986/ The cars are set to be equal and if the non-hybrids are that much faster they have supposedly misled the WEC and will be penalized for sandbagging, that's basically what the gist of it is. I think the WEC has some data from these privateer guys that shows they'll be really quick.
You recall the alms days when the Acura and Porsche lmp2 were going as fast as the Audi R10 except on the straights. They were around 825kg(?) with something less than 550, 600hp vs Audi's 650+hp (and insane torque) but 930kg. It's definitely feasible. |

Well TMG certainly can be more relaxed in the pace front because that's not really in their hands anyway, but in the control of others. The ACO is probably hurrying Oreca right as we speak so that they can get 100% guarantee of the chassis (the only one not ready) being cleared for Paul Ricard test... which will now effectively be the BoP trialing for hybrid vs nonhybrid
Anyway, if the japanese wanted to have bullet-proof chance for Le Mans they already missed the first chance by only fielding two cars again and labeling the third last year a mistake. I do think that "simulating random problems" is a good approach to testing of course but quite few times their problems at Sarthe have resulted in them not being able to get the cars back to garage in the first place, partly due to the length of the circuit... how can they replicate those circumstances... |

This is meant in the way that Toyota very often have had the faster car, but for different reasons where never able to keep the pace for all 24 hours. |

Le Mans itself has beaten Toyota so many times. Half of the things that have taken them out you couldn't dream up

If it wasn't for the smoother nose this could very well be a R18

Agree, toyotas have had always a very distinctive shape compared to ohter lmp1 cars. If you ask me, the car that took more inspiration from 2012 R18 was 2014 919 IMHO.
