skells22 should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
FIA F2 Round one: Bahrain

the newly named FIA F2 is about to start its support race act next week at the Bahrain GP event.

Who will get the pole?
Who will trigger a VSC/SC/red flag?
and who will get the reverse grid pole for race 2?

looking forward for these cars to be racing after a name change.

Leclerc absolutely owned it when it mattered, 6/10ths gap to second is hugely impressive, Prema 1-2 is a bit of a worry for the rest of the season though.

Prema is the new ART, I mean DAMS, I mean Campos, RE...

The magic ingredient team!!

Yeah it is a worry. Not surprised by Leclerc but Fuoco 0.678 behind is not a good start against his team mate. Still 2nd though. de Vries 3rd good job. Coletti down in 19th 2.5s behind, funny to think he was the title favourite for half a season back a few years ago. Racing Engineering 14-15 with 2 good drivers, that's not a good start either.

well, 1/4 of the grid had pens dished out to them Funco Today will start 5th after he blocked Marklov, Majia for going in a dagerous manner and tagging Jeffi which lead to a very late VSC and will start 17th due to three drivers speeding under VSC Gelael, Canamasas and Coletti all will start from pit lane as the 5 place grid pen can not be given out to these 3

Interesting race today but clearly drivers having to be conservative to save rubber.

The tyre saving is irrelevant now that F1 compounds are mure durable.

However Markelov proved he could be patient the longest and hunted down early 1-2 runners Nato and poleman Leclerc.

King did a good job for MP to pip the teams old driver Rowland to 4th.

Both drivers showed admirable patience early on not to get too aggressive and root their tyres. They both made decisive moves as soon as the opportunities presented themselves to move up the order early on and then again after the stops.

Albon pulled some good passed on his way up the order too.

At times though it was very processional.

Bit early to say who's going to be jousting out all year but it seems like at least one Prema driver, Russian Time, DAMS and ART with Nato and King leading their respective teams charges.

Amazing drive from Markelov. In the end he was 8sec ahead of Nato - it wasn't even close. I was thinking the optimal time might have been a couple more laps longer but in the end coming in 2 laps later didn't win him the race, he just had much less deg. He still would have won if he pitted 2-3 laps earlier.

What about Ghiotto though? It's not often you see Markelov so far ahead of his team mate. Marciello and Evans were almost always ahead of him. I rate Ghiotto as a very good driver but half a minute behind Markelov and it's not like he really sat in traffic. He was slow at the end, he finished 7sec behind Albon.

Yeah Chunterer good drive from Albon, I'm surprised how much better he was than his much more experienced team mate Matsushita. Matsu really looked out of place in that race.

The other interesting result is Racing Engineering. You've had Nato and King competing for wins with them the last 2 years. Now Nato is 2nd with Arden and King 4th with MP Motorsport - two teams that are normally near the back of the field. Meanwhile Malja and Deletraz are 18th and 20th! Deletraz's ultimate pace may have put him in the top 10 though, he was 80 seconds behind the leader after the first lap, and he ended up 100 seconds behind. But that's with no traffic. Not bad to compare to Leclerc though, he would have only lost less than 10 seconds to him in absolute race time. Not sure what happened to Malja, maybe he pitted a second time.

I think two stops would have been a better result for some of the drivers with bad deg. 4-5sec a lap difference you'd quickly make up that 35sec pit stop and be able to push 100% for the whole race. I think a few guys tried it last year too, but not the frontrunners.

A bit early to compare Markelov and Ghiotto isn't it??? Especially as one guy has just moved into the team...

Spot on, it was a good win for Markelov but let's be honest, it was a bold call tactics wise rather than blistering pace, he was behind Ghiotto on the grid remember.

As fun as the action was it seems a little ridiculous that the sprint race winner actually stopped to change tires half way through the race.

Yep, the guy that made his tyres last best of anyone in race one, is the one guy that decides to pit in race 2. It's like RT just throw caution to the wind and just try something different for the hell of it, instead of thinking about what their advantage was in race 1. Markelov is the one guy that shouldn't have pitted. What about some of the runners that had very clear problems... they all stay out! And Leclerc as well, he didn't have too many issues in race 1, he just didn't have the pace of Nato and Markelov. Bold move from him and it made the race a classic as he stormed back through. I didn't think he could to it. Going by Fuoco's pace where he dropped from p2 to p10 in the last 10 laps perhaps Leclerc would have had the same issue if he didn't pit.

The way Rowland pushed Nato off the track on lap one causing him to puncture (typical Rowland tactics that get ignored because he's also fast) really had me rooting against him. I wonder what Nato could have done if he were still in it - probably would have won.

Good race though!!

Rowland didn't push Nato off there was a very slight touch and he got an unfortunate puncture.

Leclerc and Prema put on a show but hasn't that just made a total **** take of the regs?!!

No, it's always been faster to pit in the sprint race because of the high degradation at Bahrain.

Until the series specifically bans extra tyre stops of this nature (Sirotkin says hi), you'll see this happen again.

The tyre stuff is probably irrelevent now that the F1 tyres last longer!

Hope we get back to out and out racing as soon as possible.
