V8 SUPERCARS SIGNS MALAYSIAN STREET RACE DEAL
V8 Supercars has completed an agreement to hold a round of the championship on the streets of Kuala Lumpur from 2016.

Chief executive James Warburton confirmed the contract alongside the Kuala Lumpur City Grand Prix boss M Arrasu after travelling to the Malaysian capital.

V8 Supercars will share billing around a 3.2km street circuit that will embrace some of the city’s famous landmarks including the Petronas Towers.

“We are absolutely delighted to begin this partnership with the KL City Grand Prix and be the first international racing series to participate at this spectacular event,” Warburton said.

“With a TV audience of hundreds of millions world-wide the KL City Grand Prix will be shining the spotlight squarely on the world’s best touring car Championship in one of the world’s greatest cities.”

“This four-year contract is right for the KL City Grand Prix, right for our great V8 Supercars Championship and right for our race teams and right for our sponsors.”

“Having four Championship races in Kuala Lumpur until 2019, in close reach of Australia and in a similar time zone for our fans are key ingredients.

“We would envisage that many fans would make their way to Kuala Lumpur to watch us race live on what will be one of the world’s most spectacular street tracks.”

Excited for this event. Will be spectators galore and a great support list. Certainly will put to shame the middle eastern attempts are international events for V8S.

It should do. This wouldn't be shown live on FTA which is a deep shame. Unless if a miracle happens

Yaaaay, another street circuit. Ah well, at least it's in a country where no one cares about the series. All of the positives.

I originally thought oh great another street race. The track does appear a bit wider though than your standard recent street race additions (eg Hamilton) with at least 3 big stops that i can see, which will be good passing opportunities as long as they don't f@#* it up by sticking chicanes or tyre bundles half way down each straight/gently kinked curve

How cool will it be to see the likes of Red Bull use their international brand network to leverage the V8SC involvement.

It might even be enough to keep Darrell Lea in the series

It actually doesnt matter where the races are held. If you arent going to go see them at track, instead enjoying them on Foxtel's excellent broadcast, or on #10's delayed highlights package, it shouldnt be that important for an additional race that doesnt cut out an existing track is put on the calendar.

International races should mean more income for the teams. More income from the teams should mean more competitive race cars. More competitive race cars should mean better on-track action.

Hard to see a downside... although the haters on FB have found a way

Matters to me,

...and probably to anyone else a little confused how a series that awards the winner the "Australian Touring Car Championship" runs points paying races overseas...

But i know i know, the teams need money to survive, its a tough economic climate yadda yadda yadda....

I like going to events in Australia and if we can fit another event in, why not hold them where the actual fans are?

if its a SuperStreet race it has to be shown live on 10 regardless as Ten have live rights to SuperStreet and Enduro round.

But this is an additional race. The Australian tracks, the Australian rounds will still be in place, as they ever were.
