March 802
I thought I'd start this thread to see what we can gather about March 802s.
The Lawrence March book 25 were built and, according to the F1 Register book, chassis 4, 5, 6, 7, 12-18, 20 and 22 appeared in Europe: At Thruxton in April, again according to the F1R, allocations were: 802-4 works/spare 802-5 works/Fabi 802-6 works/Thackwell 802-7 works/Winkelhock 802-13 Project 4/spare 802-14 Lisa Racing/Devaney 802-15 Fredy Schnarwiler 802-16 Project 4/de Cesaris 802-17 Project 4/Serra 802-18 Project 4/spare 802-22 Kim Mather Later sightings are 802-12 (Jurg Leinhard) and 802-20 (Mike Earle/Cecotto). Plenty reappear in 1981, again using the F1R book: 802-8, 12, 15, 17, 19, 20 and 22. Bryan has found an ex-Can-Am March 802 in New Zealand which had been Jerry Molnar's "Invader" in 1983 and 1984. This is wearing a Chico Serra cockpit surround so will presumably turn out to be 802-13, 802-17 or 802-18 but what other 802s do we know about? There were several in hill climbs weren't there? I tried googling.
I found one 802 on race-cars.com. It is 802-17, having been driven be de Cesaris in 1980 and then updated to 812 spec and raced by Paul Smith in the "British F2 Championship". It's now in Germany. And 802-6 was auctioned by Brooks in June 1999. Another is raced by Roland Perrin in historics. Another is for sale at Jester Racing (ex "Freddie Worminger") A couple went to South Africa for 1981 and Walter Lechner had one in Interserie in 1982. And Andy Barton had one at some point. Allen |

I had a look through the F1R 1981 records:
802-1 Ron Dennis 1980 - Japan 1981 802-2 Ron Dennis 1980 802-3 works 1980 - Japan 1981 802-4 works 1980 - Japan 1981 802-5 ICI/Fabi 1980 - Japan 1981 802-6 ICI/Thackwell 1980 - Daw, South Africa 1981 802-7 works/Winkelhock 1980 - Krottenberger, South Africa 1981 802-8 Hotz/Studer 1980 - Hotz/rentacar 1981 ... Interserie 1983-1986 802-9 Japan 1980 802-10 Japan 1980 802-11 Hotz/Mader 1980 (did not appear in F2) 802-12 Hotz/Lienhard 1980 - Lista/Lienhard/Rottengatter 1981 802-13 Project Four Racing 1980 802-14 Hotz/Hotz (- Lista/Straehl) 1980 802-15 Hotz/Schnarwiler 1980 - Harald Brutschin 1981 - Konrad T-car 1982 802-16 Ron Dennis 1980 802-17 Ron Dennis 1980 - Paul Smith 1981 ... for sale 2006 802-18 Ron Dennis 1980 802-19 Hotz 1980 - Lienhard T-car 1981 - Konrad 1982 802-20 Mike Earle Racing 1980 - March Racing T-car 1981 802-21 Japan 1980 802-22 Kim Mather 1980 - Roy Baker 1981 802-23 Japan 1980 802-24 Crompton 1980-1981 802-25 Lane 1980-1981 Also in 1981, Bernd Brutschin had a second family 802, as did Franz Konrad. In 1982, just the pair of Franz Konrad cars appears regularly plus cars for Peter Sturtz and Hubert Striebig at the Nurburgring. Together with the Lechner car in Interserie and the other car that appeared later in Interserie, I think I can be fairly confident that the five ex-Hotz cars were kept busy into 1982. So the contenders for Can-Am in 1982 are down to 802-2, 802-13, 802-16, 802-18, 802-20, 802-22 and maybe 802-24 and 802-25. Anyone know what happened to Roy Baker's car? Was that Barton's car? French hillclimbs perhaps? Or a large crash in 1980 that I haven't spotted yet? What varied lives these cars led: hillclimbs, Can-Am, South African F/Atlantic, Japanese F/Pacific, Interserie and even GTs. Allen |

Checking the Black Books, F1R have it was the De Cesaris car, right up to his Misano win. So I'd guess it was actually wrecked by De C at some point and F1R have extrapolated. Allen Last edited by allenbrown; 4 May 2007 at 08:17. |

There is another on race-car.com, well a tub and some other bits with 802M01 stamped on it.
Franz Konrad was still using at least one 802 in 1982 in the Euro F2 series. His team had two maybe three cars. Roy Lane used an 802/812 in the 81 Hill climb series as well. Werner Wenk and later Kurt Buess also used one in the Interserie between 83 & 86 given as chassis no 8 on the RSC site. |

Adam, Rupert
Thanks guys. Adam, do the March record refer to a tub number 802M01? Was it the tub in 802-1? It's interesting to see that only 15 802s remained in Europe in 1981: 802-2, 802-8, 802-11 to 802-20, 802-22, 802-24 and 802-25. If we can trace the UK cars (Smith, Mather, Crompton and Lane) as far as 1983 and spot some of the ex-Hotz cars still busy in F2 or Interserie, the options for the two Can-Am cars can be reduced significantly. Allen,
Tub 802M01 is shown as the tub for 802-3, the works test car sold to Le Mans. BTW 802-4 was only lent to Le Mans in Japan. According to the records it was to race once, then be returned to March in the U.K. No note as to whether this actually happened. |

Sprint Scene
Only two 802s ever made it into the British Sprint Championship:
802-24 with Godfrey Crompton in 1981 was the first. The second was ..... Roy Woodhouse in 1992. The car was fitted with a 3.9 tubocharged Rover V8. I have no details on chassis number unfortunately. |

Thanks Steve
Any idea what became of the Crompton car after 1981? I'd be confident that it stayed in the UK spritn/hill climb world but it would be good to know for sure. I think 802-22 can also be eliminated as I found a a quote from Dan Rear saying Barton built that 802 into a Special GT. So the likely Can-Am contenders in 1982 are down to 802-2, 802-4, 802-13, 802-16, 802-18, 802-20 and maybe 802-24. That's two works spares, four Project 4 cars and a highly unlikely hillclimb car. Maybe time to check some adverts. Allen |

Just found something interesting. Hotz, Horag, Lista and Leinhard are all closely linked. Hotz and Leinhard formed the Horag-Lista team in the early 1970s so 802-8, 802-11, 802-12, 802-14, 802-15 and 802-19 are more closely connected than I realised. Two of these seem to split off into the Konrad team and another one or two vanish early (crashes?) but the Horag-March that ran in Interserie was all part of the same effort. "Horag" is simply Hotz Racing AG.

Allen,
I phoned the seller in N.Z. to obtain clarification on ch. plate , which is 802-13. Owner is Warwick Mortimer , car apparently stored in a container for a very long time hence the rust and corrosion. Bryan. |

Thanks Bryan
I found little in the ads except one on 26 Feb 1981 from Project 4 advertising just two 802s. This was before Paul Smith's deal on 802-17 so I don't understand why they'd have had only two for sale. Did find lots of depressingly complex stuff on Barton's Marches but I'll cover that elsewhere. Allen |

A question for Ian Hebblewhite I guess,
which of chassis 6 and 7 is the Dave Hart car in 1981 and which the van Rooyen? Chris |

Allen -22 went from Kallay/Kim to Roy Baker who used it not very often in 1981 F2 races only I think, as there was no Aurora that year, and I don't think he went out in any Libre. into 82 Andy Barton bought it, and raced it as an F2 in Northern Libre, replacing his ex-Hoffman (I think...) 782/79B. As Libre was dying by then, he later made it into his AC 3000ME GT car, using that into 83 and 84 ?? Not sure after that.

There is one (1980 F2) for sale in New Zealand, as a roller, needing a resto, for NZ$45,000. Perhaps this is the one mentioned earlier. The seller says its ex Ron Dennis.
