quick release boss
Over christmas I bought a quick release boss for my car which I was intending to fit this week. I've taken the old steering wheel and column out but it looks as though it needs a little modification before it will fit ?
The details are as follows : Car : Van diemen RF88 with original steering wheel and column Boss : racetech purchased from castle combe (3 holes) Problem : The steering wheels 3 holes does not line up with the 3 holes on the boss ? The column at the end where the steering wheel is attached has a flat circle which the steering wheel is attached to...but the boss has to be inserted into the shaft and welded. Does this mean cutting the steering shaft ? Any help appreciated Thanks Tiptop |

The splined shaft needs to be welded into the steering column, this should be done by a competent tig welder not the village blacksmith!

Let me know what you do as I have one on order for my car although I will be making a new steering shaft up as I need to get the wheel nearer to me

Falc.
You can always use a dished wheel. It solved my problem. I can get in and out without moving the wheel. Single seater carry their own problems. |

hi tip top
The splined spigot can be nickel bronze welded into the steering column - mine is done that way and has been good for several years. Don't let anyone near it with a mig or stick arc welder it may cause embrittlement of the column steel Tig is very good and can handle dissimilar steels The mismatching holes are they far out? If the are then drill through one of the existing hole sets. If not and you have sufficient metal then drill 3 new holes at least one and a half hole diameters away from the existing ones. Leave a good margin to the edge of the wheel or boss. |

Don't worry to much all us rescue types carry equipment for quick release of steering wheels. On use only though.
Seriously though and at the risk of teaching grandmother to suck eggs, what type of welding is depends on what is the base metals to be welded. Can't help with what & how, but have seen what happens when the wrong type of welding is used in a race car. It may look strong till stresses build up. |
