John Cleland joins Eurosport WTCC team

Good news!

I am delighted that John Cleland has agreed to join me in the booth for the Eurosport's coverage of the 2008 WTCC.

John will need no introduction to touring car fans and I know we can rely on him to interrupt my seamless flow of nonsense with some proper facts and pithy comments.

He will have his first introduction to Eurosport's unique broadcasting requirements in Valencia next month...

Awesome! Remember him commentating on Bathurst 1000 in 98, had a few good punches at some of the drivers. Now if you can only get Derek Warwick...

I hated this guy (in a friendly motorsport sense!) when he was in the BTCC, I was always a Ford guy vs Vauxhall.

But he's a good choice for the WTCC commentary.

Cleland is God.

An inspired choice, nobody can fill David Leslie's shoes but this is the next best man.

Great news, will he be with you for the whole season?

Yes, unique is a good way to describe it. Its not every channel where you hear French people counting backwards or random guys saying "I can hear myself still, change the wires"

Blimey thats an Inspired choice, John very much tells it like it is so could we hear the commentry go something like this:

Martin: Rydell's hit Thompson there damage everywhere as cars serve to avoid the carnage.

John: Well that was hopeless by Rydell he's driving like a w**ker out there dont you think Martin.

Martin..umm well i was thinking that John but were not allowed to say it....

Best of luck to both of you, should be great!

Woohoo, my touring car hero!

Could you fill the commentary booth with any more cynicism than a Haven & Cleland pairing, I think not!

John Cleland is a great choice as co-commentator, and he is a Scotsman so even better.

an excellent choice.

As previously stated, "Not David Leslie" but then who would be??

Can't wait to see/hear his comments when he's being paid for them, as opposed to being a Racer with a grudge. (after incident). Maybe he'll be allowed to "tell-the-truth". and maybe even drop some hints about past events!!!

Great news, and a worthy successor to David. Makes me sad to have to listen to the Swedish commentary (not that they're bad, I just prefer some english enthousiasm ). Are the races still streamed at the ES website?

I'm sure it's way better than the Dutch commentary, which is awfull. He (Bert Devies?) usually says things that are either:
-wrong
-just what everybody sees when watching the screen
-meant to be funny, but are not.

It's a shame that Peter Baert isn't on anymore, I think he sometimes does 'motorracing weekend', inwitch the items are to short to tell more inside information.

Glad to hear that you guys are as thrilled as me that John has agreed to come on board...

I know you'll give him a good welcome and, for those who need it, I believe that for the European races, our commentaries WILL be on the streaming video...

For technical reasons, that was not possible for Brazil and Mexico - and may not be possible for Japan and Macau either...

But the first two races (plus the other stuff on Eurosport) were available on-line, commentary and all, via the official WTCC site.

It's Jeroen van de Ploeg. Since a few years Bert Devies isn't commentating anymore on Eurosport.

Great choice! I think John Cleland is one of the true touring car legends, or at least for me who grew upp watching BTCC in the early 90's . He was entertaining in interviews back then so I can smell some good commentary too.

This news is rather uncanny. I was just thinking the other day of John and his commentating abilities. Thought he might be a good candidate for the BBC's F1 coverage in 2009, but this is even better

Wonderful news Martin, albeit of course in awful circumstances. Will be looking forward to the debut. Will ES be putting in a 10 second delay in case John says anything too naughty/honest
