Just read a bit in a car mag which reports that the next Bugatti Chiron titanium brake calipers will be made by 3D printing. Saves a couple of kg, apparently, but each one takes 45 hrs to make! Presumably the machine doesn’t need tea / comfort breaks or only work an 8 hour shift......

Mike, just have a look to the said machine location. If the answer is France, they will have to cope with strike, workers forgetting to come at work, titanium missing, worn out watch indicating wrong time of the day or night and stuff! Well ya no those people, dont you?

Yup, apparently it uses titanium powder which is heated and layered using laser tech.... Guess the printer is bit beyond the ones you or I could buy, however!

Hmm.

I'll ask the people at Rolls Royce (not the Goodwood BMW people) whether they use such a technique when I go to the AGM later in the year.

So where do the people that resurface the roads come from?

Why are refurbished French highways so smooth surfaced and level whilst British roads are not?

The write-up is on page 10 in this week’s Autocar, if you are going anywhere near a newsagent.....

If they're going to make turbine fan blades by 3D printing, I don't want to know about it

Exactly.

However they do find it useful for creating a model of a CAD design that people can look at, handle, and visualise to spot potential problems with the product or find ways to address manufacturing challenges.

I would have thought metals would more likely be sintered but I guess some might refer to that as 3D printing these days.

French highways you have to pay for, the private companies running them are more than rich but the toll prices are still increasing. And the recovery is a kind of monopoly and the restaurants dont "serve" french cuisine image though!

The roads in Spain are amazing, even ones going to most little villages up the mountains are like a billiard table complete with Armco, all EEC money of course !!!!

Well I watched the start and finish of most F1 races and now that "grid girls" are no more I'll have to make do with the finish

Grant, my cousin has just retired form being a jet engine man for BA after a lifetime starting with Freddie Laker. I was looking at a turbine blade amongst his collection in a tool box and never realised how complex they are, and how much they cost !

Gerard, 200 years ago a famous highway man (brigand) Bad Bob Borble buried his ill gotten gains in a field near a little village called Luton. Luton is now a large town and the treasure still lies buried beneath it's street, and people areconstantly digging holes trying to find it, so the roads in Luton are full of potholes.
