Cheap forms of Motorsport
I want to start racing, only at club level though, and I was wondering what the best car would be?
I only have a reletivly small budget, about £5000 a year. Thoughts and comments please. Cheers, Scott |

Aside from car purchase, I'm sure that amount would see you through a season a lot of club series. Certainly in my own series of Caterham Graduates, many say they do a season on £3-4k (half of that is entry fees). Car is the standard Graduate class start from about £7k - PM me if you want details. Your other major expensive in the first year is getting your race licence and buying your safety kit - perhaps agrand there?

Go for BRSCC Southern FF series, cars from £3,500 ish ready to go, perhaps cheaper. Need licence, kit and trailer. £5K should cover. £5K a year should be fine with no major engine or accident costs. You'd really enjoy it!!

For me, I'd go for a Van Diemen RF85/86. Lots of parts available and plenty of people who know how to set up. Check around Brands because a good local person will help you most. I reckon on spending £2/3K a year with no problems but probably go a bit above. Entries are £165 for us (Oulton) £250 for double headers plus petrol etc. Plus your travel costs etc
Loads of people will help you! For bits try:- Demon Tweeks www.demon-tweeks.co.uk or Grand Prix Racewear www.gprdirect.com BRSCC, Steve Burns www.brscc.co.uk Give it a go, you won't regret it! |

Suggest you get a car as soon as you reasonably can. Do a few tests and perhaps a few local sprints to get the feel of it before you race it? Also gets you used to trailering, scrutineering etc without as much pressure

I think you will be very hard pushed to do your first season in anything for £5000, espicially if that has to include your kit licence etc.. (this will be best part of £1000 leaving £4000 for car/prepping and entry fees)
I would look to share a car with someone else that way the capital intensive part (the car) will be halved. I presume you are doing all the prepping your self? If not then budget about £500 per race. Trailers can be hired. I dont want to dissillusion you but I think for the first season you should budget £10 000 especially if you are looking to buy a single seater as you are quite likely to knock a corner at least once in the season. I tried to return your pm but your in box is full - good luck! |

Steve, Scott did say without big accidents!!
Simon, I understand what you are saying but I don't think you need £10K for a season in local FF, although you could easily spend it. Also, if you have accidents and it gets expensive - you can stop until you save enough to carry on. |

I am hopping that the accidents side of things does not concern me, but as i marshall regually, i can safely say, i dont think this to be true!
