Spark Plug leads
I've been running some standard spark plug leads on my engine for a few years now, and not had any problems. However, I wanted to know if any of these fancy and expensive ignition leads advertised actually give any more power? Has anybody done back-to-back tests with standard plug leads? What makes to people recommend? Magnecor is a name that has been mentioned to me. Any advice anyone? Waste of money?

you do not tend to get more power by changing your plug leads . you get a better spark at the plugs by reducing the lead resistance . i can recomend magnecor leads as they are a good quality lead and you can get them made up to suit your application with varies differnt ends to suit your needs . you do not want to go over the top with the thickness of the lead 8mm seems to work adout the best

Speedy5 Tested two brands that were recommended to us and we tested each lead (replacement) against what we already had (GM) in the Speedway car. Top Gun and NGK both beat what we had. We placed the lead(s) on a machine that threw a continuous spark 20mm through a glass tube to an earth. Interesting to watch the way the spark turned from twin blue sparks to a single then a furry orange then started to misfire. We did each test for about 17mins.......trikes

I use Magnecor.
I don't know if they give more power but they are they only leads that have lasted more than a season or two. |

It's very unlikely that fancy leads will give you 'more power' on their own. They may give you a good spark, if the plugs are good, and the coil packs a punch. If you're just using standard-ish plugs and coil, then you're very unlikely to see any benefit versus standard OEM leads, unless your leads are knackered.
Even with a good spark, you're only helping the fuel burn perhaps a little faster and more completely. This has benefits of its own, but you probably won't see any more BHP. |

On Nick Swifts dyno, we tried all the performance leads and plugs brands to see if any performance gains could be made.
Sadly, there was no bhp improvement. |

Leads don't make more power, they only loose power if they are not up to scratch

I THINK 99% OF 'SNAZZY LEADS' are just gimmicks, fancy colours and looking racey etc !
I think I run magnecor 8mm, and they've been fine for a few years now |

I run Lumenition Silicon Blue leads. They gave a really good performance improvement over my original leads, but that was because the originals were copper and the magnetic fields were playing havoc with my ignition amplifier!!

Two meetings back our engine man tested and installed a new set of Top Guns. Today on the dyno we had a misfire and guess what it was. Yep one of those Top Guns. Done only two meetings where we only did two racing laps at each of those meetings. Uummm not impressed. Never heard of these magnacores think I'll google them to see if there available in Australia............trikes greenbean bit help here please

That was a very long time ago though (15+ years) so it may have just been bad luck or they have improved since then. |

Ohhh, that's a bit worrying. Mine have been on about 4-5 years, but the milage is pretty low as its just a race car. Were you doing high milage for those 6 months?
