Careers that ended too soon.
Ivan Capelli's very promising career was effectivly ruined by Jean Claude Migeot, aerodynamicsdesigner of the Ferrari F92A(t), over the course of -not even- a -full- season. A final chance at Jordan saw him crash his car in qualifying for the South African GP, making him unable to start the race. If memory serves me right, he didn't start in the Brazilian GP as well and was quickly replaced by Thierry Boutsen.
Ivan was definatly out. Stefano Modena was also highly regarded. At least by Ken Tyrrell and Ayrton Senna. Put his Tyrrell second on the grid for the 1991 Monaco GP, gathering a total of 10 points for the Tyrrell-team that year. The next season he was stuck with a Jordan-Yamaha. Got him nowhere. *poof* another promising career down the drain. Can't help but wondering, what if. IMHO these drivers were destined for greater things (I'm not saying WC-material, but hey, why not?). Any other drivers who in your opinion deserved a second chance? |

I dont think Capelli was all that good but he deserved a second chance. Check out the story on him at F1 Rejects.

I felt sorry for Stefano, but he was the typical Italian driver of the 80s and 90s. The success went to his head and he couldn't handle it.

How about Alan Jones, he retired (originally) way too early at the end of 1981. The way things transpired in 1982, he would have been a good bet for the '82 title.

Capelli was hyped up in 1988 after getitng some great results in the March, which people assumed wasn't a great car, but Adrian Newey designed it. He beat Mansell using the same engine that year, but did very little in other years.
Alex Caffi is another one who never achieved what he was capable of, he did a great job for Dallara alongside De Cesaris, but things went very Pete Tong for him at Arrows. Moreno deserved a better chance at Benetton as well, he has showed time and again that he was capable of being a front-runner. |

Bellof without a doubt. Won the Group C championship, got an F1 podium in an outclassed Tyrrel, then *splat* the next year at Spa when he tried to pass Ickx going down the inside through Eau Rouge, flat out.
Still holds the lap record for the Nurburgring Nordschliefe, I believe. Gilles, Senna, Ascari, Clark, obviously. Those are the easy calls. Emerson Fittipaldi effectively ended his F1 career when he began driving for his brother Wilson's team, which never produced a competitive car. But his magnificent success in CART and at the Indy 500 certainly proved he was a top-flight driver well into middle age. Hans Joachim Stuck. Magnificent in Touring, GT and Sports cars. But his impressive open-wheel career is often forgotten. He was runner-up in F2 in 1974, and in that year started doing occaisonal F1 races with March, which continued until 1977, when he joined the Brabham-Alfa team, to replace the recently deceased Jose Carlos Pace. He finished third at Germany and Austria, 5th in Britain, and had a _huge_ lead in a downpour at Watkins Glen until he threw it into the Armco. Not once in his time at Brabham did he fail to come in at least two positions ahead of teammate John Watson!!! With performances like that, it's unfathomable to me why he wasn't picked up by a top team for 1978! But he wasn't, and ended up with the lackluster Shadow team in 1978, the hopeless ATS in 1979, and finally gave F1 up all together after that season. Truly a shame. Of course, there was the absolutely fearless German pre-war motorcycle and Grand Prix champion Bernd Rosemeyer. If any man ever truly mastered the treacherous old Nurburgring, it was him. He drove in a fogged-in Eiffel Grand Prix at a pace that amazed even the legendary Tazio Nuvolari, who finished second _well_ behind Rosemeyer's massive mid-engined AutoUnion. The car was a record-breaker for sure, and Rosemeyer was the natural choice to try and break it. So a session at the Montlhery oval near Paris was arranged. But Hitler would have none of it, and insisted the record attempt be carried out on one of his new Autobahns. Going flat-out, Rosemeyer's V16 machine, with it's special sleek low-profile record attempt bodywork, was caught by a crosswind, and flipped into the trees, killing him instantly. Cripes, three Germans on the list. That's not right.

Luca Badoer - I know he's a test driver, but his proper career of 'racing' seems to be over already. He's a talented driver, who deserves a good drive. As did Andrea Montermini, the pair were at Forti together and Forti were so useless they ruined the careers of them both.

Senna wouldn't be there now. He'd have retired in protest at the various gizmos we have now because he was a racing driver as opposed to a pilot.

Nice One Lee - we can only of wished at this point - funny but I can hand on my heart say that I haven't watched an F1 race flag to flag since Senna checked out! For me at least he made F1 look like an art - something TGF hasn't been able to do - JMHO

Maurizio Flammini was one guy I would have liked to have seen in F1,but the wildly erratic March F2 driver of the mid '70s was "released" from his F1 contract before the first race of the season for destroying all their available F1 cars in pre-Xmas testing.I'm sure he could have rivalled Brambilla and De Ceasaris for armco bending if allowed a crack at F1.
