Graham, a 79 Donny prog shows that both Peter Sadler and Robert Parker were entered in T492s, so they must have had a car each. Does this help? Sadler defintiely had his in '78

Interesting!

The purchaser of my car was a J Sadler (Peter's wife/father etc?) and not P Sadler.
The other word/title was Presler wear (Preslerwear/Presler Wear)

Google does nothing for these words, though Peter was a good driver in the 60/70's.

Can anyone remember the car's colour? (should be Kelly Girl Green which I think is a light green?)

It has been suggested that J Sadler is the Porsche expert, Josh Sadler who i know remotely, but I think not/

Paul said the previous owner to him came from Sayers Common, Sussex, and had a Frog Eye Sprite.
I think P Sadler came from Sayers Common?

Finally, my car was ordered on 28 Dec 1978 so would have been ready for the 79 season, not before.
When Dennis/Len advertised it they dated it a 1980 T 492

Graham the S'stone Int Trophy race in March 79, has Peter Sadler entered in a
T492B. It lists his home as Market Drayton, some way from Sayers Common... John Webb is in the race too, in his 'National T490'. This was the Smurf car, that I guess Bob K now has.

There are no Lolas entered from Sussex, though an American, Ken Battle, has a T492. Jonathan Bropwn from Fulbrook (where's that??) has a T490/492.

Kelly Green is a defined colour; it is a light pea green hue. Assuming that the original front does have Kelly Green gelcoat, then the probability that this is the only other T490/2 apart from HU4 supplied by the factory in green increases vastly.

Don't worry that the present fuel tank does not seem to be the high volume bag tank supplied by Lola as part of the long-distance kit. If you recall, Dennis advertised the car as having various mods including F3-size wheels and tyres, but it still had what was basically a Pinto motor. This may not even have had a low pressure electric fuel pump, never mind the array of pumps and filters that a Hart 420R would require. The tank in your car might well be the one from the T490/HU6-Hart built to Tony Dickinson's order that Alan Humberstone transferred from the wreck of HU6 to the donor T492 that was then sent to Harman and Schneider to fit with KG roll cage/bodywork etc.

Agree Clive.
Jusy found a 3rd Kelly Green car in the Lola list1

HU 33 ordered by Pressler Wear , same as mine was, but with a J Sadler also involved in ordering mine.

Cannot find anything on Pressler Wear.

This is getting as bad as Finding Dennis, and Finding Paul Wilkins, and finding Alan Humberstone....This car has an invisibility cloak recently used by Harry Potter....

There was a company called Pac-A-Pic Preciware, who made picnic sets and Tupperware-like plastic food containers and dinnerware in the late 70s.

I know for a fact that one time, they sponsored a race car; I can't for the life of me remember in which formula. It is, though, an interesting near-homophone....

Just found out from Paul that the owner of the Lola before him in 1985 was a Bernie Garwood.
Bernie is dead, killed in the Healey accident.

I can pick-up the original nose section next friday which will reveal more details to the gel coat colour.

any details??

WHO is Bernie Garwood?
His name has never featured in this 'film'!

I hope he is the guy who painted it dark red, and J Sadler is the next owner and that will be that.
I can send a précis of 114,000 hits and 1300 posts to Gerald at Lola and see if I can have a chassis plate.

I'll get it proof-read by Clive!

Son/grandson/?

James Sadler & Sons (Ltd)
Earthenware, mainly teapots
c.1899 - 6th March 2000
Formerly Sadler & Co
In April 2000 the name and business (but not the works) of Sadler was taken over by Churchill China.

Peter used to make teapots. He turned up at Donington with one once.
Some pms sent but they don't seem to be recorded in my messages area.

From Sadler's Internet Site:
James Sadler was founded in 1882, and is one ................. in Burslem at the heart of the ceramic industry in Stoke-on-Trent, ... an encouraging thought that the original James Sadler, whose great-grandson is the current chairman, would have approved .....Remember, if it doesn't have the James Sadler mark, it isn't a James Sadler teapot!

=====

In 1999 (after a 15% drop in sales) a new corporate logo and brand identity were introduced along with a reduction in the number of different products being made. 850 products had been in production in 1998. This was cut to just 340, including plates, cups and saucers. The managing director in 1999 was Neil Sadler, great-grandson of the founder of the business. Some production was outsourced overseas and the workforce was now 140.

On 6th March 2000 the company went into receivership. In April its brand name, designs and archive were purchased by Churchill China. The name was retained as a separate brand entity with manufacturing incorporated into the Churchill factory in Cobridge.

Nearly there....

"They began making novelty shaped teapots in the 1930's Crinoline ladies, a father Christmas teapot and in 1938 the iconic racing car teapot, followed by a tank with "Old Bill" as the lid in 1947."

and the colour is close... That can't just be coincidence.....

Now would that look good on the hills? Ditch that boring red Lola body. You seem to like a challenge.

Ha!
Thanks for that!
Can't do the body as the seat position is against the rules (ish)...

I'm sure you would have said if you recall our new player, Bernie Garwood?

For those who may not know, Ogits used to run several S 2000 cars in the heyday of the Class.
I need to contact Paul about picking up the body so will chat about this owner and how he has found him out, could be simple memory jogging by all this interest after 27 years.

Hm....

I don't remember Bernie G. Like a lot of other stuff. After a few years as the cars got older/cheaper I'd guess some of the cars were owned by X and driven by Y - son/friend/employee etc. so the links aren't always direct, as in J Sadler.

Can you pm with an email address? I think some of mine aren't getting through and they certainly aren't stored in my message box.

Kelly

Sideways a bit.

Mr Kelly started a temp. staff agency in 1946 - and someone - an ad man? (or girl, of course) - must have put the colour to the company logo etc. Staff became known as Kelly Girls hence MCD Webb's penchant for girl drivers to help publicity. So where does that leave Mike Wilds?
And a certain young Thatcher as well.

With the business, teapot & colour links, you'd have to assume the Sadler family were involved in the racing effort over many years and are likely to have records, photos, memories etc. Some one probably helped with prep.

Head for the Potteries.

Josh Sadler had something to do with Autofarm (Porsche specialists near Oxford) Weston on the Green I think. Josh used to race in the Porsche supercup supporting the BTCC in 1988/1989.

Records

Can anyone post entry/race lists etc.? How far back do the S2000 club records go? Each year there are a few car/driver changes but quite a few did two or more years. Most cars did every race in a season. All you have to do is spot the changes. And then cross reference with the hillclimbers, Thundersports, 6hrs, crashed, exported etc. Easy.

Having been in Porsche Club circles for 24 years now, I know Josh and his background, and I have never known him in anything but a 911.(and an Allard) Will call him just to be sure.

I hope the history is:
1
Bought new by J Sadler in 1979, Kelly girl Green T 492 HU 62
The Pressler Wear is NOT connected to J Sadler but an American outfit supplied by HAAS. i was mistaken to link the two.

J Sadler and Son is/was a very old potteries business and his surviving son Neil has written that at a tender age he used to go to Silverstone to watch Moss etc racing, but no mention of racing himself in anything.
His favourite sport is Golf.

2
Sold to Bernie Garwood

Car painted Dark Red, and raced (by someone) in the Caribbean Airlines series in 1982.
I suspect the car was damaged in this race series.

3
Sold to Paul Watkins in 84 ish

Restored and given a new front body and re-painted rear, all orange with a tweaked Pinto. Wider Revolution wheels added.
New front body and new side pods added, originals damaged.

4
Sold to Dennis and Len.(etc)

I found the '500' link last night. He must have gravitated to that point from S2000!

Asked a friend off 10-10th sadly banned for life now for some research.
Steve came back just with this lot; at least Bernie does exist as a racer:

Graham, thanks for the info – I have researched in my old programmes and had very little in the way of results. What I have found though it interesting!

25/08/79 – Silverstone – No 11 = Peter Sadler from Market Drayton in his T492B – he qualified 7th but failed to finish in the Top 6
03/06/79 – Donington Park – this was a none-championship race & Sadler wasn’t entered (NB Gunnar Nilsson memorial Meeting)
30/06/79 – Oulton Park – No 11 = Frank Sytner (Entered by Peter Sadler) – Sytner qualified 3rd
19/08/79 – Donington Park – not entered.

For 1980 Peter Sadler had bought a Lola T590 which he ran for Sytner so I suspect Bernie Garwood had bought the car for that year. I went to just three race meetings where S2000 cars raced (20/04/80 Silverstone; 25/08/80 Oulton Park; 06/07/80 Donington Park) and there were no entries from Garwood in any of these races.

For 1981 I again only attended three events where there were S2000 races (29/03/81 Silverstone; 24/05/81 Oulton Park; 21/06/81 Silverstone) and again no sign of Garwood.

10/07/82 Oulton Park – Bernie Garwood was entered but failed to turn up. No sign of Garwood at either 24/07/82 Oulton or 26/09/82 Oulton.

NB from 1983 onwards the S2000 championships ran a Pre 1980 class.

No sign of Paul Wilkins at any of the events I attended where S2000s raced in 1983/1984/1985/1986. However there were a lot of entries for Lola T492 cars in these years but none that could be linked to Wilkins.

NB the Caribbean Airlines series wasn’t at any events I went to in 1982 as there were two S2000 series.

Graham there wasn't a Caribbean Airways series at all. They just backed a few races in the 'British S2000' series in 82. And there was only that 1 series.

In 81 there were 3 or 4 Long-Distance S2000 races that didn't count for the main series, I'm not certain whether these made up a championship in its own right.

See my other comments re 'Bernie Garwood'. And re J Sadler ordering the T492 for the '79 season, surely thats related to Peter Sadler, maybe his initial?

That's useful, as it demonstrates that the car must have been dark red in 1982 in order for the car to be carrying Caribbean Airways stickers over dark red bodywork....

Sadler

Business profile: Neil Sadler by Andy Stanistreet 1999

His father Eddie ran Burslem-based teapot manufacturers James Sadler and Son with his uncle, John.

......were invited to the family home in Acton near Newcastle for evening meals and business discussions as a matter of course.

In his spare time he watched motor races at nearby Silverstone, often begging paddock tickets to watch Stirling Moss and Mike Hawthorn speed round the circuit.

‘‘By this time it was just assumed by my family and myself that like by elder brother Peter, who is now chairman, I would be going into the family business.''

There's another historic racing Josh Sadler who owns a Connaught B-type F1 car built up from spare parts by Stephen Langton.

He has apparently had work done by Jim Stokes on the Connaught so you should be able to contact him via Jim Stokes Workshops.
