All the technical penalties are a disaster though. And not Abt DSQ because he didn't have the correct sticker.

F1 must laugh at it sometimes with some of the oddities of this series. The silly "dramatic" music that plays at the start of the race and when their lights system went down it just kept repeating. Your first weekend back FE and you manage to cock up the entire start and put them behind the SC.

If this series wasn't promoting a clean green electric future (thus the interest of top drivers and manufacturers) I don't think it would have lasted 4 seasons.

i think that's a lot to do with the track surface. it looks like rallyx drivers would have more relevant skills on some of those circuits than your average gt or single seater driver.

The spins from a low grip surface are expected, but they pull moves which in another series would have you penalised. And this, forcing your way back into the pack after a spin would have you sent home from the circuit in most series. These are all professional drivers, and they drive like they've never sat in a car before.

do you think the circuit layouts encourage that kind of nonsense though? the clips i've seen from hong kong suggest it's more of an indoor kart track layout than a proper street circuit...

I think you're spot on there. I think another contributing factor is FE cars are built like tanks compared to other single seaters. You can take relatively large hits and carry on.

Kart track. Cars that can take abuse. It shouldn't be a surprise people driver stupidly.

Yet we saw more overtaking than most international open wheeler races.

Montreal Formula E race cancelled by Mayor

Montreal’s Mayor has cancelled the double-header which was set to serve as this season’s Formula E finale over the $35 million cost to the host city.

Since the Toronto IndyCar race also occurs in July, I suppose it could make sense for Formula E to use most of the same layout (modified to shorten one or two of the straights) on the weekend before or after IndyCar, if it was possible to quickly find a corporate sponsor and make the other necessary arrangements.
Or, maybe they could consider this suggestion of using Downsview Airport?

While not as close to downtown Toronto, it does now have a new regional train (GO Transit) and subway station right there at the northwest end of the property, and presumably could provide better viewing locations than the street circuit, while likely not requiring as much annual set-up work after some initial repaving. The airfield is owned by Bombardier Aerospace, but perhaps they could be encouraged to allow it to be used for a Formula E event by the federal government, who recently provided the company with a large interest free loan.

Montreal spent a few million getting custom made concrete blocks. The entire Paris event only cost $5m. Montreal soaked up half of that making barriers. Of course it was cancelled - it was miss-managed so badly that someone should be sacked and potentially prosecuted for the decisions made.

As great as the Toronto circuit is, FE won't race there. They use these tiny little interesting tracks to be different and to hide the speed of the cars. It's very clever, but they'd look silly on track with IndyCar.

Formula E used a shortened version of the Long Beach circuit in 2015 and 2016, two weeks before the IndyCar events, and similarly still use (as far as I know) a shortened version of the Monaco F1 circuit in alternate years. Looking at the Montreal F1 layout, I would guess a hypothetical Formula E track could have involved using most of the southern end of the F1 course including the present pit lane, along with some new link across the middle of the island somewhere in the general vicinity of the casino building. I don't know how expensive and practical that would have been, but in hindsight it might have been a better idea than the entirely new temporary street course.
I suppose Circuit ICAR is somewhat comparable to the Berlin Tempelhof Airport circuit used by Formula E, but being almost 40 km away from Montreal is probably not what Formula E wants.
The Formula E website now shows TBA where Montreal had been on the schedule. I have no idea if that means they may be hoping to quickly add another race to the schedule as a replacement.

You're totally right, I missed those Long Beach and Monaco events. When you watch them now, the cars do look very silly on those circuits.

I believe FE was offered the use of the Montreal F1 circuit and turned it down.

Following the cancellation of the Montreal races, a possible schedule addition may be "a track in the UK", or expanding the existing Punte del Este and Berlin Tempelhof events to each have two races, according to Sam Smith of e-racing365.com .

They're trying to appeal to non-motorsport fans by having popular TV presenters.
