Derek Minter
I was saddened to see that Derek Minter died a few days ago at the age of 82.
My parents used to take me to the road race meetings at Castle Combe in the late 50s early 60s where he was a regular competitor, and won the title of King of Combe. (He was also King of Brands!) I also remember Derek after he had retired from bike racing, becoming the 'works' driver for Johnny Walker in the original Formula 4, in about 1968, but that didn't last long! RIP Derek Minter. |

A great loss, he was one of my boyhood heros back in the 60s always beating people on newer machinery, unfortunately he got very badly injured at a low key event riding for fun at Darley moor years after he had retired. RIP Derek.

I can remember Derek Minter on a 500cc Norton, at The King of Combe Meeting in the Late 60's....I even managed to get his autograph.
Happy Days. |

He ran his own truck to earn a crust in more recent years, often bumped into him at the dealer's workshops. Nice guy and always happy to talk bikes. RIP Derek

Saw him beat Hailwood on a Gilera (?) at Brands riding his Norton 500 when Mike was at the height of his fame, fantastic rider.
May he Rest in Peace. |
