FWD and slicks

Hi all,

I'm about to enter my first race next weekend in a fwd fiesta st, I have a question about slicks on a fwd car do I put new on all 4 wheels or do I need scrubbed try's on the back?

Thanks paul

Slicks on all 4 to begin with. If you find the balance odd you could experiment with another setup, but the FWD cars I have seen still suffer from lift off oversteer, so you would want all the grip you can get at the back.

yes but you will never scrubb the rears in, that's why the touring cars put there rear wheels on the front for the warm up lap then swap them around.

yes when I ran fwd slicks, new ones on the front & scubbed on rear, all well set up front wheel drive cars allow a degree of rear oversteer to help the front turn in, but when cars have cold slicks this can be dangerous until up to temp, as soon as you go out trail the brakes to get some temp in wheels & really weave car about (and get used to oversteer at low speeds) this is the only way to warm your rear tyres

Paul I race a Proton Satria GTi in Hillclimbs here. Lift off Oversteer. To get that under control this is what you do. Instead of lifting off totally, change to a different gear if you have to, lift off to no less than half throttle, then move your left foot to the brake. Stabilize and control the rear end oversteer with the brake pedal. Have the throttle flat to floor before you get to the Exit and rocket out of the corner. Let the throttle pull the car straight out of the corner, get your foot off the brake quick as you can. I went 2.5 seconds + quicker over 1000m. My take from Ross Bentleys Book. Worth while read big time! ps I had to lift my steering column so I could left brake.
