Mickj, yes KRT did go to University, in fact he's still there and I'm waiting for him to do a 'real' job. It improves in the Summer when he occasionally is allowed to write club race reports for Autosport. OK, end of proud father bit. As for my 'other hand' I was trying to provide you bunch of comedians with the opportunity to come up with an alternative list but since you haven't, I guess most of you agree with me. Couldn't stop laughing though!
Allen, did the Frisbee have much opposition? |

My vote also has to be the 917/30K. I saw it run at Mid-Ohio in '73. Donohue and Follmer (in the previous year's 917/10 that Bobby Rinzler bought) diced for most of the race until Donohue turned up the boost and went by. From what I understand, the thing pulled about 1,340hp on the dyno at max boost. Yes, that gets my vote!!

Pretty amazing. Peter Morgan's fantastic book on the 917 suggests that the Porsche technicians even saw flashes at 1,500bhp on the dyno!! Given that Paul Frere apparently did 0-60 in 2.1 seconds in a 917/10, we can only assume that the 917/30 was AT LEAST as fast too.
Just like its Sportcar (earlier) brothers, the 917/30 was also as quick as a contemporary F1 car, but unlike the 917K it was close on tighter tracks too. At Mosport, which included the slow Moss Hairpin, Donouhue's pole time was 0.8seconds faster then the lighter (though admittedly far less powerful) Lotus 72 of Peterson, which took pole for the GP. Any other suggestions? |

What I heard from things writtem about the 917/30 was that it had 1200hp and that the driver had a dial for nother 300hp when they wanted to pass a car.

Yes, I believe that there was a way for the driver to change the amount of boost, though I'm not sure by how much.

Just a note. The 917/30 was run in 74' at a couple of events, not just 73'.

Yeh, I knew that it was run once, with Brian Redman up, though can't remember why. I think it was because the organisers realised that their (fuel) regs had virtually killed the championship off. The Shadows had little opposition as a result, so the Porsche was invited back. I think that it was second, losing out - Redman asserts - due to poor tyre info.

OK, that should be 'can't remember where' , not 'why'!

Where - Mid-Ohio. The track was easy on fuel, so Penske was convinced to run a once-off, figuring they'd be able to actually fight the lighter, less thirsty DN4. Redmond finished second after Follmer had wrecked his radiators bashing into the back of his teammate repeatedly and then retired. Haywood finished third in the Brumos 917/10.
Brumos ran their 917/10 only at Mid-Ohio and Road America. No other 917s ran all year. |

Yes Paul, it is Follmer trying desperately to get the better of Oliver, but eventually failing again. Olivergot his fourth win out of four, and the Championship.
The photo was the third in a series and here is the second... |

My favourite Can Am car had to be the McLaren M8D, simply gorgeous, even if I wasn't able to see one properly until tmany years later.
I also had admiration for two other cars that made headlines, the tiny tire Shadow and Peter Bryants Autocoast. The Shadow must have been awesome to watch and drive, a go-kart on steroids, must have been disconcerting in traffic though. The Autocoast I admired because of the success (I know it was limited) achieved by such a very small team, and the innovation (insanity?)of using titanium in the cars construction. Jackie Oliver also showed true class in taking the fight to the all conquering orange steamrooler. |

It was fun seeing those Can Am Cars at the Coy's Silverstone Weekend a few years back, I missed them first time around, too busy working and raising sprogs! Is there anywhere where thay come out to play this year?

a bit late to the party I am.....
Here's my Can Am set. As you will see it is "new era" stuff. I will be adding more as I get the time to delve further into my archives....

re: Geez, you're everywhere!?!?
I stumbled blindly into a number of situations that turned out to be great places to be.
Every time I start looking at images I haven't seen in many years I realize it once again. I was very fortunate. |

Hi Marc,
Thanks for all of your great photos, I found them a few weeks ago and they brought hours of delight. Shame on you for being such a front-runner though...all the ones I had hoped to find were mid-pack in Can Am and Atlantic. C'est la vie... Seriously, great work and thanks for making the effort to share it! |
