Would this piston be OK with a clean up?

Get it crack tested to be sure but it should be servicable. I have seen worse going into higher stress engines!

Definitly get it crack tested, then you could take out the worst by radiusing the edges Al.Try not to take off too much, you could land up with a ballance problem then you,ll have to do all of them!

Christ AL I knew that the Yank Tanks ran big cc, If thats life size (as on my screen) your engine must be about 20 litres !

It is one of a forged set that were very cheap but I believe this got damaged in transit so was not subject to a grenading engine or anything. Yeah sorry I tried to scale it down and it kept staying the same, its 4 inchs across actually.
PS they have never been used and are new. Last edited by Al Weyman; 30 Aug 2007 at 07:52. |

If they are made in China they're probably made from old Lada gearbox casings !

They were not made in bloody china (Duh). I bought them from a person in this country on FleaBay who had fitted them to rods but never ran them. Terence I will be racing on both days (hopefully), knowing my form Saturday would be a good idea, PM if you want to come and I will give you my mobile so we can hook up.

On a serious note, a lot of fake stuff is made in the far east with all the right markings, Spain has a problem with dodgy merchandise , and I wonder how long it will be before we get it affecting the motorsport side in the UK ?. If it hasn't already, as there is always someone out to make a fast buck !
As for the problem the thread is about, I would drill the end of the mark and run it, Even if you filed that piece out I doubt if the lost weight would make much difference on a 100ml piston. |

Do you mean drill right through or just indent it?

Drill right through it. I have done this, I also ran a complete season with 4 welded up pistons ! Talk about a shoestring racer ,but they were welded up by one of the best alloy welders in the south east !!!!!

Is it the thrust side or the drag side?, prefer drag side
Either way I would get a dremmel on to it then have it tested. Crack, or maye ultrasonic, Pistons are cheap, entire motors are not. (Reletive statement!) Gordan there is this exact issue with a load of fake Walbro fuel pumps. Funny thing is I know people who have used them (not knowing at that stage) and they reckon the are better! There will be heaps more of these, and said e-bay is the perfect distribution tool. |

As the piston comes up the bore this would be on the upper side of a right hand rotating engine so I would say it was on the less vulnerable side??

Sorry AL been at Goodwood all day . The thrust side of a piston is the side when viewed from the front of a clockwise rotating engine to the "left"

Trikes agreed that would be the best idea, but he may not be able to buy one piston to mach, especially if he brought them on EBay as you don't know the origins of them. As Notso said EBay is the perfect way to get rid of things !
I remember seeing a boxed set of pistons made in India that differed in size by 15 tho and were machined perfectly round . |

If the damage is limted to just on the piston skirt and it has no cracks, just file away the offending part and use it. If the piston is part of a balanced set, order a new one with the same batch number marked on the other seven, then still have someone weigh them out to .1 gram to make sure all is correct. I've run worse in medium horsepower configurations and I think that's pretty much what your after.
If you think a 4.0 inch bore is large, pickup a 4.625 bore piston for anything over 500ci! |

Sorry to be so long, yeah Al, Gordon is right with the trust side, think of it as the pressure on the up stroke, if you know what I mean.
Seriously, I doubt there would be any problems but the cost of an internal check is minor. Whether the best test is ultrasonic or x-ray I have no idea, I leave that decision to the experts. Quote:

Yes I figured that as well Gordon so this would not be on the thrust side which is good. I would buy a matched piston to be honest but there is no manufactures name on them although there is a number. I am only after building an engine with about 450 bhp max and restrict revs to about 6500 and 15 minute stints, to be honest that will be more than enough power to deliver reasonable results I need for the historic class racing I do especially as we are restricted to a hard 225x55x15 tyre.
