Mr Schenken Gets An Understudy
It seems moves are afoot in V8Supercar land to secure an understudy to Mr Schenken as an FIA-accredited race director.
There has been some noise for a long while that AVESCO wanted Mr Schenken to be invited to seek other opportunities, after some of last years decisions (principally Symmons Plains, but other incidents going back a number of seasons were discussed) Primary problem with helping Mr Schenken move on is that the V8Supercar Championship Series being an FIA-accredited international series, requires an FIA-accredited Race Director.... and guess what... Mr Schenken seems to be the ONLY FIA accredited Race Director currently in Australia..... So if AVESCO were to exert its influence over CAMS to change horses, they would need to secure another Race Director from somewhere, with the appropriate FIA signoff. It could mean we had a rotating fleet of them from other parts of the world, a different controller each weekend... which would drive up costs, and destroy consistency... (not that they are consistent now but still....) The other solution that seems to have been executed is to bring in an understudy to Mr Schenken, with a view to having a backup initially, and an able bodied (and accredited) replacement available for the near future. Needless to say, there is apparently some animosity from the incumbent regarding this move, suggestions from the street indicating that the political faction machine that is most of CAMS has been in full swing trying to stop this from happening, to protect one of its favourite sons.... Not sure who will win this little tug-o-war... but I would suggest there should be no harm in finding a backup for a position where the incumbent isnt on the right side of 20 any more.... and perhaps the new influence will improve consistency and accuracy of decisions as well... (or so AVESCO hope...) If any of this actually happened of course |
