Jos Verstappen arrested

No surprise really.

http://formula-one.speedtv.com/artic...riend-assault/

Hopefully a court finds him guilty and gives him the maximum possible sentence.

"Jos Verstappen has been arrested in his native Netherlands.

The former Benetton, Stewart and Minardi driver turned himself into police after fleeing the scene following an incident involving his 24-year-old ex-girlfriend, according to Flemish newspaper De Standaard.

Dutch police confirmed the arrest of a 39-year-old man after an incident in the southeastern city Roermond.

Unconfirmed media reports say Verstappen deliberately struck his former girlfriend — who was taken by ambulance to hospital with heavy bruises and abrasions — with a car.

Verstappen was previously accused of beating his girlfriend.

"It's definitely not the first time he does this," the unnamed woman told RTL television. "I think now I need to go and hide — I don't know what to expect now when he is released."

In 2008, Verstappen was fined and sentenced to three months suspended jail time over an assault case involving his ex-wife.

And more than ten years ago, he was convicted of assault after fracturing a man's skull at a kart track."

Sadly he has, with several incidents over the years.

Hopefully this time he will be locked away for a long time.

JJ Lehto, and now this. hmmm.......Is it something about being an ex-Benetton/Renault driver/employee, that makes them do bad things?

If he has done what is claimed to have been done, then he deserves everything coming to him.

I'd say a long history of violent assaults on innocent people was a lot more serious than the single incident JJ was involved in. Not to excuse the stupidity of JJ's actions, but Verstappen has a long history of deliberate acts of violence and had been sentenced to spend time in prison.
The current incident where he attacked his ex partner by deliberately driving into her is not the act of a normal person.

I'm just waiting for his 'greatest fan, Steve Neilson to appear and defend his thuggish violence! :-)

taxi!

Bertrand Gachot
However, his season was cut short by a two-month prison stint, received for spraying CS gas on a London taxicab driver after a traffic altercation (his race seat was filled temporarily by then-unknown Michael Schumacher, making his Formula One debut). When he was finally released from prison after two months, he had missed four Grands Prix (including his home Grand Prix in Belgium).

Back in the day I did have 'Free Bertrand Gachot' T-Shirt.

(Please note that this wasn't a Bertrand Gachot T-Shirt that didn't cost me anything, but one which was sold to fund the campaign to reduce the length of his jail sentence...)

Crashot was of course a Jordan driver, rather than a Benetton/Renault hireling.... but same book, just in a slightly different cover.

Heavily backed by Marlboro during his early years. He seemed to feature in a lot of those Havoc videos then...

Well, I guess there won't be any Verstappen to Champ Car rumors now. Always enjoyed Google translate changing his surname to "stumbles over himself."

In all seriousness, what a complete piece of a ****. There's a point when you say the guy has a real problem and needs help, but after the third time, that's not the point. He's had a chance to correct his life and get anger management, therapy, whatever it is. Now he just belongs in prison. I hope he doesn't get away with this because he's rich and famous.

At least as far as I can tell, he was considered a "star" in his home country, enough to milk it for sponsors for many years, but in recent times he's done a great job of ruining any public image he had.

Sounds like he needs to do some hard time.

Personally, I hope a court makes the appropriate decision after hearing the evidence, and if he's found guilty then they set an appropriate sentence for the crime!

Absolutely.
We don't have all the evidence, the history or the circumstances, and while I don't condone violence everyone deserves a fair hearing, and an apropriate sentence.
Trial by media and online servicing has never resulted in just sentencing....

Well it was run by Mr. Briatore and we do have to remember about a certain 'crashgate' scandal with Nelson Piquet Jnr.

Plus Schumi was there as well and he has never done anything controversial!

When you think of it... Good thing JPM didn't try to make justice by himself at Interlagos 2001

Quite right. Unless we had all the evidence, including being able to judge the credibility of witnesses, nobody is well served by dragging up past misdemenors, gossip or innuendo.

Well we are entitled to discuss it in the light of the information in the public domain and even form our own opinions and there is nothing wrong with that. We would however be foolish and arrogant to assume that our opinion is more valid than those who see all the evidence at the trial and we should also respect any verdict and sentence.

Jos Verstappen will be released from custody tomorrow.

Attempted homicide charge has been dropped and no evidence for (attempted) aggravated assault.
