Ugliest car since the old 'tea-tray' March.

The entire 70's seemed to be crammed with clangers. I presume this was due to the designers and engineers getting the hang of the wings and other aero innovations until they got used to it and that gave rise to the elegant 80's and 90's. Although I tend to be forgiving of the 70's. It was still informal where all the grandee garage and factory teams had a pre-corporate spirit.
I'm a fan of Fernandes and I appreciate the heritage of the Caterham name or 'brand' as it is these days but looking at that car its just some machine manufactured by a corporation. It has all the soul and look of an airport stairway truck. Surely the sport can do better than that if only in aesthetic terms. |

The simple fact is that aerodynamics has got to the point where each and every square centimetre of the car is an area to be exploited. I'm sure that even the folks who rethought the nose height regulation didn't do it for aesthetic reasons. Probably more for safety reasons.

The latest Motor Sport magazine podcast explains why this years cars are so ugly. Pat Symons is the guest and he explains it is the application of the rules with respect to the height of the nose of the car and the height of the front bulkhead. Worth a listen.

I liked the March 711,
it was quirky but not ugly like the Caterham. I'm not sure which is uglier, the Caterham or the new Dallara IndyCar? Caterham CT01 Dallara DW12 Last edited by bjohnsonsmith; 28 Jan 2012 at 06:03. |

Oh dear... I hope the other teams find a more pleasing to the eye answer to the new regs. Ferrari seem to have done so based on the pic in the other thread, but the 'in the metal' car will prove one way or the other. |

Peter Sauber suggests that: “For reasons of aerodynamics, this step in the nose is almost inevitable"

All the teams are figuring out that having your F1 challenger moonlight as an airport stairway saves money.
