Modified Physics for Spirit of Speed 1937

For those with a copy of Spirit of Speed, this may be some useful news. I've been fiddling the physics of SOS and have made some very interesting discoveries. Seems that it is possible to move the cars of SOS much closer to the sim column by dialing down the SKIDSCALE and brake values.

You can go HERE and find the files in the SOS37 folder.

There are two Watson files and two P3 files.

The modified Watson files can replace the original Watsonflyer_5.tc file and the modified AlfaP3 files can replace the original AlfaP3_12.tc file.

Download whichever files you're interested in, copy into your SOS Archives folder, rename the original Watson or AlfaP3 file to something like [ORIGINAL FILE NAME]ORG.tc, rename one of the downloads of a particular car -- Watsonflyer_5.tc or AlfaP3_12.tc -- to match the original file name (watsonflyer_505.tc becomes watsonflyer_5.tc, AlfaP3_1208B.tc becomes AlfaP3_12.tc, etc. -- SOS will only recognize one Watsonflyer_5.tc at a time, so if you want to try out both Watson files, you'll have to do them one after another...exiting the game, renaming them, so on.), fire up SOS, choose either a Watson or an Alfa and see what the differences are.

The Watsons have just had the SKIDSCALE dialed back from 1.6 to either 1.0 or 0.5. The Alfas have had both the SKIDSCALE and the brakes reduced. While now you can slide, you'll find you can't stop as easily.

Not sure how many folks are still running SOS, but for those who are and who take the time to try out the modified files, I'd love to hear from you!

The entire SOS fleet (or at least one of each car type in the fleet) has been modified. It is now possible to find out how each car type handles with less traction and softer brakes.

And, time allowing, one of the original programmers on SOS is offering his services to unbend some of the ropey coding that was tossed in just to get the title out the door.

Too bad the Streamliners were not available on the Dreamcast. Brooklands in the Streamlined Auto Union is amazing!
