Longer Tele for Nikon D-70s

Looking for advice.
My Wife has a n-90s and now a D-70s.
For a telephoto she has a Tamron 70-300 zoom.
At times she wishes she had something longer.
Any advice?

She shoots as a hobie, for her own enjoyment. Mostly oudoors-nature.
I can't justify a huge sum, so what would be my options.

Thanks to all.

Bob, it's a tad difficult to talk about options without knowing your budget

Why not try a teleconverter? Available in 1.4x, 1.7x, 2x and 3x (last will be expensive). Hopefully she uses a tripod. There will be a reduction in maximum aperture of the lens corresponding to the magnification (you can't violate the Laws of Physics) so that the ƒ1:3.8-5.6 will become ƒ1:5.6-11 with a 2x unit.

New ones are $125-$180. Take the camera & lens to your local camera shop and try one out.

Used ones go for ~$75-$125 on eBay.

Next best and more expensive is a Tamron 200-400 ƒ1:5.6 (obsolete, $250-300 used), then comes the latest version 200-500. Another alternative is a Sigma 135-400.

Click HERE for examples of prices.

Make sure that it is an AF-D rated unit.

PM if you are interested in a 1.7x converter.

If I was buying something longer these days , I would need a LOT of money, but it depends on your requirements.

Sigma do some big zooms, 135-400, or 50-500.

I had the first one, didn't think much of it, so I sold it again and bought a 300mm prime. But let us know your budget, and we can narrow it down.

Ok. First THANKS to all for your help!

I am looking not to go over $1,000.00.
Like I said it is her hobbie.
I started her off with the N-90s, then two years ago I got the a Nikon Coolpix 5700.
She is now hooked on digital.
So for Christmas I got the D-70s.
She has a;
Nikon 28-80
Phoenix 19-35
Tamron 70-300
She also has a Tri-pod, and a mono-pod
Like I said , she likes outdoors, mostly. Although she will be along with me this year to Montreal for F1.
So she will have two days of the three to spend in the city.
One day at the track, while I am working.
her birthday is April so I am looking to get the lens for her then.

Again Thank you all!
