More Europeans heading to the 3rd US Rallycross round

Sverre Isachsen, Liam Doran, Frode Holte and Per Eklund are all heading across the pond.

A Ford, a Citroen, a Volvo and a Saab. Sounds different, doesn't it?

The source for the info about Per Eklund was Sverre Isachsen’s website.
But since yesterday it is Per’s apprentice Finn Toomas Heikkinen (19) who is on the entry list.
Still not yet on the list are Frode Holte and Jussi Pinomäki, Rhys Millen and Tanner Foust…

Here one can see the difference between the "old" and the 100% new RX track at the Lightning Raceway at NJMP. Lap distance is now less than 50% of before.

Good map Rx-Guru, that certainly looks more like a "proper" rallycross track than the previous layout. I would think a tighter track like that will provide a better viewing experience for the spectators as well.

I am biased, but yes, I think rallycross will catch on here. This year was very much about everyone getting to see it in person and begin to understand it.

The organizers are learning as you can see from the changed course to be used this weekend. More American drivers are coming in Supercar and over the winter many will be developing specific - as opposed to converted rally cars - for 2011.

This afternoon Round 1 has a slot on NBC in prime time. That is like getting coverage on Grandstand or equivalent. As exposure increases and drivers look for cost effective sport their numbers will increase.

Heading into the last two rounds, the series is where it expected to be.

Sounds good. Personally I hope it does catch on in the USA. Hopefully European Rallycross and American Rallycross can go hand in hand and maybe sometime work together.

I'm looking forward to seeing how rallycross develops in the USA.

That's awesome news Mark. Rallycross could be ideal for the US motorsport audience - and there may be a slight gap in the TV motorsport market with Indycar struggling for ratings. My only worry would be the lack of American-built cars competing at the top level. The US audience tends to like watching American cars, although that might be changing with Toyota now in Nascar.

I think getting a torrent of the show is going to be your best bet.

I thought this weekends show was about Pastrana's Mt. Washington hillclimb though, not rallycross? The schedule I've got for NBC is:

October 31st, 2010, 3:00pm - 4:00pm ET Red Bull Speed Chasers
November 14th, 2010, 3:00pm - 4:00pm ET Round 1 Rallycross Championship
December 19th, 2010, 3:00pm - 4:00pm ET BAJA 1000
January 16th, 2011, 3:00pm - 4:00pm ET Round 2 Rallycross Championship

Is this wrong?

News from the US:
In 2011 there should be a completely new RX track at NJMP using parts of the Thunderbolt Raceway. So far the RX took place at the smaller/shorter Lightning Raceway.

I had the good fortune to attend last Sunday's festivities at New Jersey Motorsports Park. Aside from some casual X Games TV views, this was my first exposure to Rally racing of any sort.

If this deal is managed properly, it will be HUGE. The attendance was decent for a blustery November day, and the action on track was furious and fun.

The level of factory support was a big surprise, as was the appearance of several WRC teams. I'm not able to give much of a report of the action from a fan's perspective, as I was there to meet with a few folks...but I will try to post some photos on the WRS site that Stephen was kind enough to point out.

Let's hope that Rally America can put together a series of national Rallycross Championship events for 2011. I believe this is a great motorsports property that has all the elements to appeal to a fan base that has little interest in established U.S. racing series.

See you next year at the track!

One of the most surprising aspects for me was how close the Americans were to the top European men, reckon we will see quite a few Yanks sampling the ERC next year, especially team Subaru, shame we haven't seen Block have a proper go yet mind you.
