book subjects

My fellow racing history devotees,

I'm always on the prowl for books about a couple of subjects. Perhaps some of you can give me some suggestions for titles, and if you can comment on the quality, that would be interesting.
The subjects I'm especially interested in are:
- tracks and track design in history
- technical history of racing cars.
- (history of) suspension design
- F1 (and also sports car racing) in (roughly) the period 1965 - 1985

Thanks in advance,

mat

Off the top of my head.

Ivan Rendell - The Power and The Glory.
Doug Nye - Formula One cars.

I'll let Tim D and the others carry on.

- technical history of racing cars.
Two books come to mind with respect to techincal side of F1 cars:

The Modern Formula 1 Race Car by Nignel Macknight which comments on the development of the Lola BMS-Ferrari of 1993.

The Anatomy and Development of the Formula 1 Racing car from 1975 by Sal Incandela (1982)
A very book on the development and design of all parts of the F1 car from 1975 to 1982.

Sports Car Racing 1965-1985?

There can only be one recommendation.

"Time and Two Seats", by Janos Wimpffen. It's a quite colossal undertaking. Two heavyweight volumes, incorporating not only the results of every WSC race from 1953, including Mille Miglias, but also a readable history too.

Mine is almost perpetually open on the desk, as I go trawling through it for some detail or other. (Usually trying to pin down the identity of some small privateer Fiat on a mountain pass or something!)

Incredible piece of work.

Best Books

My top 3 recommendations would be:

The Power & The Glory - Ivan Rendell
(Detailed history of motor racing in general)

Into The Red - Nick Mason & Mark Hales
(Something of a 'coffee table' book but superbly photographed)

50 Years of the Formula One World Championship - Geoff Tibballs
(A collection of quotations from past and present formula one insiders. Fascinating)

Hope these help.
