Asp, it would be better to contact the Marshals Secretary at the one of the organising clubs such as the BRSCC or BARC as there are often jobs you can do before reaching the minimum age to marshal (18 I believe). Sometimes it would mean working in the pits or helping out in race control. But you should speak to the clubs first, explain your situation and that you wish to become a marshal as soon as age permits, and ask what other duties you could legally perform until then. Also ask about training days and whether you could attend in advance of your birthday. I am sure you will find the clubs helpful but if you need any more help then please ask ok. You can always PM me here and I or Marshal will do what we can to help.

Stephen.

Teh best person to contact at Donington is Di Hardy who organises the Donington Emergency Services team on diane@esteam.freeserve.co.uk
For Pam Dearn at Silverstone, who is the administrator for the BRDC marshals club, it is pam.dearn @brdc.co.uk

I see that you live in Lancashire, so no doubt you'll be joining us at Oulton. If so, the best club to join is BMMC. You can join now as a junior member, then when you're 16 you'll get your Trainee Marshal badge & a grading card.

At 16 years old you can train as a Specialist Marshal - duties you can do are pits/startline, paddock/assembly or communications/administration. You can't go trackside until you're 18.

I'm not sure about the training day. You can't, for insurance reasons, do fire training until you're 18; you may be able to go to the training day, although you won't have a card to get a signature. It would certainly be worthwhile.

For more details, take a look at the BMMC's website (www.marshals.co.uk) - you can download a copy of the Grading Manual & the MSF Pocket Guide to Marshalling.

If you want details of who to contact, send me a private message & I'll give you names, phone numbers, etc.

If you don't like the thought of waiting another 2 1/2 years to get trackside, you could consider bike marshalling!

Thanks a lot Dave. I have looked on the BM(R)MC's website [see, I even know the old name ] - but was told I could be on the bank @ 16 if I got parental signature. Has that changed or something?.
Either way, I'll really have to drive to the meets/training days - I can't force Dad to be my taxi! - so I'll have to wait till June & when I'm 17 (unless they change the law before I get in there

Just so you know - I will be joining the BMMC without fail - my current research as revealed it to be the best. (I like doing plenty of reaearch). I've seen someone @ Oulton who was in that new cafe one meet - so got some info there, and on a disk someone have got the guide to marshalling. What I'll probably do (I know there's a maximum 2 styles you can learn @ first) is Curcuit & Kart marshalling @ Three Sisters. None of you happen to have more info on Kart marshalling by any chance, coz' there's not a lot of info.

Thanks again, and see you @ Oulton once I've got these AS-levels out of my way! !!!

If you can make some contacts at the circuits there is normally someone who would be willing to give you a lift if required.

Asp, just to confirm its always been the case that you can start on the bank at 16 (I did) with parental permission. I also think joining the BMMC is definitely the right way to go, and the suggestion that you should contact the circuit (or put a request here) is a good one. Look forward to seeing you inside the fence

Looks like I was misinformed, or misinterpreted what I read!

My excuse is that it's so long since I was 16 that I didn't take too much notice.

Some of the Oulton marshals also do karts at Three Sisters; if I see any of them at the training day I'll see if I can get any information for you.

I started marshalling after 1 Touring car meeting, have now been doing it 2 years and i have not looked back. Last year we marshalled Le Mans and this year the grand prix. I would reccomend it for people who love motor racing. Ihave experienced things that i will never forget. Tony B

Dave - thanks alot, I'll wait with baited breath!

Thanks for the idea about contacting the circuit - but I'm so busy (5 AS's are way too many; + Debating + Orhcestra's... ) - I woundn't be able to do anythings until June anyway - which happily fits with when I'll be learning to drive (hopefully ).

Can't wait till June than - for more than 1 reason!

Take a look at www.marshals.co.uk for BMMC details (other marshals' clubs are available!)

There's a training day at Silverstone next weekend. Get yourself on that & you're well on your way!

Asp,
Yes you can go on the bank at 16. I did. Also another tip for lifts is if you speak to the various club newsletter editors you can ask them if you can place an ad for anyone to give you a lift to meetings. Or get to a couple of meetings and put an advert up at sign on asking for lifts and you'll bung a fiver or whatever for petrol, diesel or LPG OR ORANGE JUICE( depends on the car)s
Hope this helps.

Hello all, newcomer to this site here. If you want to start marshalling, feel part of it from day one, get REAL close to the cars and end the day as if you have contributed then.....................................

try Speed Hillclimbing!!!!!!

just imagine......
cars from minis to ex-F1, on a track about 12 feet wide with no gravel traps etc, passing you in excess of 120mph!!!!!
At most Midland venues you get:
Money (not much but we all volunteer!)
Lunch (FREE)
Raffle Prizes (FREE)
Beer at the end of the day (some FREE)
but above all, a superb grounding in the Do's and Don'ts of marshalling without having to worry about other cars arriving while you work. You learn to do the basics safe in the knowledge that no other cars will join your incident,(unless someone screws up badly!), and get see first hand how to deal with any incident.
Also, at Speed events, EVERY post below an incident is involved as other competing cars need to be stopped and dealt with. Tell me any form of circuit racing where a post that is 5 sectors before an incident actually has anything to do???

We also make a point of keeping all posts aware of what is going on as most Speed events operate an "open-line" communication system whereby all posts hear everything that Control or the reporting post say.

Fancy some real close-action marshalling?
On-the-job training?
A feeling of being " Part of It" ?

then drop me an email and I'll give you any details you require.

Hi Stew and a huge welcome to the forum. On behalf of Marshal and myself, we hope you will become a regular contributor to this part of Ten-Tenths. Marshalling is not just about track or rally marshals. It includes those of us who enjoy sprints, hill climbs, karts and dare I say bikes!

Once again a warm welcome to ten-tenths.

Stephen.

The advantage of being a member a marshals club whether the BMMC or through one of the many racing clubs is that it allows you to find out and volunteer for a huge variety of different types of events. Many marshals cross the boundaries and marshal at rallies, hillclimbs, race meetings etc and it makes the marshalling much more interesting to get these many different viewpoints. I find that many of the marshals that leave tend to do only one activity or circuit and that if they tried different types of events and visited different circuits then maybe fewer would depart.

If your becoming fed up with the same old race meetings (or whatever)then try something different, you might find that marshalling once again becomes the enjoyable activity that it can be!!
