Bring back James Hunt
I miss the Huntmeister, 9 years today since he went. He's my all-time favourite Brit driver even though he retired b4 i was born! Used to make me laugh on the commentary with Muzza. A toast to Hunt "the shunt" |

A grand guy, I got to see to see his career making drive at Watkins Glen when he hounded Ronnie Peterson in the Hesketh privateer March for the whole race to finish a close second. Until that drive, he was an unknown quantity with a reputation for wild rides, that day he became one of the big guns.
Cheers, James. You had a lot of fans in the States, too. |

Although I never got to see him race, he was an absolute gem in the commentary box. Never afraid to speak his mind about any issue and was the perfect partner for Murray (up until Martin anyway.)
It is so sad that he was taken from us so early but he'll be showing the lads a thing or two up there. |

For a good read and a great insider's account of the incredible 1976 F1 season, read Hunt's "Against All Odds".
RIP James. |

The title of this thread had me worried for awhile. I agree - he would have made a perfect co-announcer with Martin.

I remember the Canadian GP - 1977 - he had just passed Mario and came up to lap his teammate Mass, and Mass took him off the track at turn 3. He was approached by a marshall and decked him! He then crossed the track on foot on his way back to the pits, was fined or something...
A fine gentleman away from the race, bon vivant, and passionate and committed racer. I certainly miss him. |

James Hunt was certainly a complex character but he was a racer to the core. At the 1973 Canadian Grand Prix we came across him in the paddock still dripping sweat after a practice session, a cigarette in one hand and a cup of coffee in the other. He already had a bit of a reputation for being less than friendly at times, so we sent my little sister to him with autograph book in hand. We were surprised when he passed the coffee to someone to hold, put the cigarette in his mouth, and signed the book with a smile. It seems men like him don't make it to F1 anymore.

I have always thought a lot of James Hunt. Even more so since he was the man who "discovered" Gilles, if you will, after his trouncing at Trois Rivieres, and was man enough not to be intimidated by it.
I really used to enjoy his commentary with Murray. I learned a lot about F1 from James. RIP... |

Being 16, I know little about James Hunt, but I have been brought up listening to stories of him. Afterall, my mom's best friend used to date Mr. Hunt!

He did have a penchant for decking marshalls as i read his biography, really funny. He once got so drunk and had no sleep the day b4 a test session that when he finally went out onto the circuit he parked it up and went to sleep in the F1 car...
he may have died young but he had done so much! ;0 |

He was a real opposite to Murray, and at first they apparently hated each other, but it worked well. Murray was always restrained in criticism and eagar to play up the good side of people, whereas Hunt would often criticise drivers like Patrese and Piquet, and once called Jarier a 'French wa**er' live on air. He used to do a lot of commentaries while high as well.
