AVUS, Berlin Challenge
I have always loved this track, even though its not in use any more (nordkurve is used for Pocketbike/Minimoto and RC racing now...). I was wondering what happened to the 'wall of death', the huge banked corners used in the 30's when the Auto Unions and Mercedes and other cars battled it out with they're special streamlined cars, the track was never to be raced on again after the death of Keith Odor, in a similar crash to Mark Porters, in a super touring race, and the DTM cars found it hard not to have a pile up at the start. Your job is to edit the track, so that DTM can race there again!

The Southern loop of the 1968-88 5 mile/8km varient is still visible on Google Earth, Gogle Avus, Berlin an it drops you half a mile (800m) South along the road fom it.

You really can't edit Avus, as it was just a carriageway, so, theres no roads you can build off of it, I think I will design a perma-circuit.

Theonly way you could edit AVUS, would be to completely move the track.

However, I thinking on it a bit, and using Google Earth, I think that you can retain the original hairpin, and recreate the banked corner in the top left.
It may not be the best solution, but the banked corner cannot be used, as it is in the middle of the city centre. Gradients would have a slight drop on to the hairpin, and a rise afterwards, buit it is mostly flat. The red line shows the original course. S/F is on the top straight. |

Editing a track that is just straight-hairpin-straight-banking in its original state is almost impossible without losing the track's original character, which is exactly what Tathrim's shape does. Anyhow, Tathrim, you designed a great shape for a permanent circuit - I just wouldn't call it AVUS.
But with the Lausitzring not being profitable and having trouble in attracting the necessary race events, it's fairly unlikely that something like a reconstruction of AVUS would be done, since the straights of AVUS are part of a highway bypass of the city. |
