1957 Rally Monte Carlo

Does anyone here know the TRUE reason of the cancellation of the 1957 Rally Monte Carlo?

I believe that it was because there was a petrol shortage because of the Suez crisis

Might be a good idea to move this to the Motorsport History Forum. Might get some more info there.

@ Spectator: Sounds at least plausible to me as the crisis was in late 1956 and France was heavily involved. Thanx so far mate!

Yes, I wasn't suggesting that spectator was wrong just that it might be better to open it out to a wider audience.

Yes, indeed, reference to Graham Robson's book, 'The Monte Carlo Rally' (part of a series entitled 'The World's Greatest Motor Competitions'), confirms that the initial reason for the cancellation was the Suez crisis. However, he goes on to add a quote from Jacques Taffe, who suggested that the real reason was psychological and that the organisers were 'afraid that the rally would create jealousy among French motorists' who, I assume, were being subject to petrol rationing at the time!

Anuauto has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
The RAC Rally (which ran in March then) and the Alpine Rally were also cancelled in 1957 for the same reason. The Sestrieres, Tulip and Liege ran.

I think you will find that the rallies that did run were after April when the Suez crisis was over.
Agree that a lot of it was psychological. It would not have looked good to have rally cars tearing around Monte Carlo when the rest of the country was severely rationed.

Certainly seems to have been the higher profile events that didn't run. Sestriere ran in February and Lyons-Charbonniere in March but the later Alpine was cancelled at the last minute?
